‘West Indies had to be ‘brave’ on pitch where ‘you are going to get out’ – Brathwaite proud of West Indies’ Test win in challenging conditions

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said that batters had to be brave and trust their plans to succeed on the difficult pitches in Multan, after they won the second of two Tests to level the series and also create a little bit of history. This 120-run victory was their first in Pakistan for 34 years.

Brathwaite led by example. After being part of a collapse that left West Indies 38 for 7 in the first innings, he chose a far more aggressive approach in the second.

In fact, he made his fastest fifty in Tests, consciously taking chances against the Pakistan spinners. This approach earned West Indies a lead of 254 and it proved plenty more than enough.

“Both Test matches the pitch was tough to bat on and we knew that so as I said I just wanted us to be brave, to do whatever plans we have, to go there and execute them as good as possible, because regardless of what there will be a ball with your with your name on it on this pitch,” Brathwaite told reporters after the second Test in Multan on Monday.

“I mean it was a difficult pitch to bat on so it was good to see the confidence we went about doing it and you know as I said very proud of this team.

“It was just for the batsmen to be brave you know. I mean as batsmen, as I said everyone’s going to have their plans. Be brave in whatever you want to do as batsmen,” Brathwaite said about West Indies’ strategy. “Bowling wise bring forward the batsmen as much as possible and there will be 20 balls that you will get 20 wickets because as I said the pitch is a difficult pitch so there’s no second guessing.

Brathwaite maintained that the pitch was “very, very difficult” but had no complaints about PCB preparing spinning tracks.

“I would say Pakistan could prepare the pitch how they want. What I’ll say is batsman will not be averaging high on these pitches. You would average 15-20 and obviously the spinners will do well. and as I said it’s a difficult Test pitch to score runs. You’re going to get out regardless, it’s just a matter of when. So you know as batters we had to come up with a plan of how we want to score and put runs on the board.”

Brathwaite also heaped praise on Jomel Warrican. The left-arm spinner finished the series with 19 wickets – the most by a visiting bowler in a two-Test series in Pakistan.

“Jomel was outstanding. To see how he went about his bowling and the pressure he built from from ball one, I mean it was amazing,” Brathwaite said.

Warrican also put in a crucial contribution with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 36 in the first innings, with his 68-run stand for the last wicket with Gudakesh Motie key in reviving West Indies from being 38 for 7 after they won the toss and chose to bat.

“With the bat you can’t count him out, I think he did a fantastic job with the bat as well. But bowling wise I know he’s worked hard over the years. He’s been in and out of the team but it’s good to see him get the chance and he grabbed it. very very proud of him uh he was outstanding.”

West Indies’ triumph in Multan came almost exactly a year after Gabba 2024, and Brathwaite said it showed their ability to adapt to different conditions.

“It’s a very important win for us it just shows that we can get it done in any conditions once we believe and always have a plan,” he said. “It’s right up there with some amazing Test wins because coming here, playing here in Pakistan, it’s never easy to win a test match you know so coming up with a win is fantastic.”

IPL 2025 Auction: Sherfane Rutherford Sold to GT for INR 2.6 Crore at Indian Premier

Gujarat Titans (GT) have signed West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford for Rs 2.60 crore while Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bagged Manish Pandey for Rs 75 lakh on the second day of the IPL 2025 Auction here at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah on Monday.

In the accelerated auction, the bid for Rutherford started at Rs 1.5 crore from GT while Mumbai Indians also chipped in to raise the price beyond Rs 2.5 crore. Gujarat had the final say in the room sealing the deal for Rs 2.6 crore.

Rutherford’s T20 stats

In 153 matches, Rutherford owns 2,471 runs at 23.09. He has 12 fifties under his belt. Notably, 106 of his T20 runs have come in the IPL from 10 games. With the ball, Rutherford owns nine wickets in T20 cricket.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders also made a wise move with the addition of experienced middle-order batter Manish Pandey in the squad. The defending champions bought the player at the base of Rs 75 lakh with no bidding to offer from other teams.

The other notable purchase in the accelerated auction was Tamil Nadu spinner M Siddharth, who was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 75 lakh. Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of Uttar Pradesh legspinner Zeeshan Ansari for Rs 40 lakh after an early interest from Delhi Capitals.

Lucknow Super Giants also bagged offspinner Digvesh Singh at his base price of Rs 30 lakh.

International stars Finn Allen, Dewald Brevis and Ben Duckett remained unsold while domestic players Jhathavedh Subramanyan, Prashant Solanki, Rajan Kumar, Sakib Hussain and Vidwath Kaverappa also didn’t get the buyer in the accelerated auction.

The ten IPL franchises have submitted a shortlist of 143 players for the accelerated round. Notably, James Anderson, the oldest player in the auction pool, was not included. Glenn Phillips and Kane Williamson were the other notable omissions.

Among Indian players, prominent names like Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur, Devdutt Padikkal and Ajinkya Rahane were absent from the accelerated round.

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder to miss Bangladesh Test series due to shoulder rehabilitation

All-rounder Jason Holder will miss the West Indies’ upcoming two-match home Test series against Bangaldesh to continue his shoulder rehabilitation.

While Holder missed out on the series, off-spinner Kevin Sinclair returned to the side after recovering from an injury, which made him miss the West Indies’ last Test series.

Right-arm pacer Anderson Phillip also made a return to the Test fold for the first time since December 2022. Phillip impressed in the domestic 50-over competition for Trinidad & Tobago.

He followed it up in County Cricket for Lancashire by claiming a nine-wicket match haul against Worcestershire towards the end of September.

Alzarri Joseph is another quick who is returning to the Test side after he was rested for the South Africa series to manage his “considerable workload.”

Joseph was the vice-captain of the team before being rested. In his absence, the selectors promoted Joshua Da Silva as Kraigg Brathwaite’s deputy. Even with his return, Da Silva has retained the vice-captaincy.

Gudakesh Motie and the uncapped Bryan Charles had to make way for the players incoming for the upcoming series. Motie is playing for the West Indies in the T20I series against England. However, he was not included in the Test side following his disappointing performances against South Africa.

In the two Tests, he just picked three wickets, while Charles, who didn’t make his debut in the South Africa series, has been left out of the squad.

The two-match series will begin on November 22 in Antigua and on November 30 in Jamaica. Before the beginning of the series, captain Brathwaite will lead a CWI Select XI for the two-day warm-up against Bangladesh. The game will be held on November 17 and 18 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

CPL 2024, GUY vs SLK Match Highlights: Hope, Hetmyer put Guyana on course for top spot

A strong batting performance, led by half-centuries from Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer, have put Guyana Amazon Warriors on the brink of securing top spot in CPL 2024. In the penultimate league game of the season, Guyana managed to defeat Saint Lucia Kings, who will now anxiously wait to see if they can hold on to their second spot in the table.

Saint Lucia were abysmal in the run chase but Faf du Plessis’ fighting knock ensured they didn’t go behind heavily on the net run rate. Guyana got off to a flier when Azam Khan took on Alzarri Joseph.

The boundaries kept coming before a top edge saw Azam depart for a 11-ball 26. The batting side had to rebuild again after the other opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell just before the conclusion of the powerplay.

While Hetmyer ensured the run rate didn’t dip as he kept finding the boundary, Hope made a sedate start. Even a six around the halfway mark didn’t really boost his strike rate as the batting side heavily relied on Hetmyer for impetus.

He smashed a 26-ball 50 in style to ensure Guyana remained on top before being sent back by Joseph.

Hope finally found his timing as he took on Khary Pierre for three sixes in an over that brought up a 29-ball fifty. Once he departed, the rest couldn’t make a huge impact at the death but Guyana still managed to breach 200.

“It is just the mindset (talking about his good form this season), trying to be as clear as possible and most importantly trying to enjoy my game. We (Hope and I) batted a lot together and it is all about taking on the right match-ups. It’s been nice playing at home and nice to have my family here supporting and nice to be at home.” says Shimron Hetmyer

Saint Lucia were pumped up for the run chase as du Plessis targeted Romario Shepherd, an eventful over that saw the pacer concede three fours and a six. The carnage in the PowerPlay saw the chasing side knock off 63 runs but at the cost of two wickets.

To make matters worse, Imran Tahir breached Roston Chase’s defence with a googly in the 7th over and from thereon, Guyana took full control.

The spin trio of Tahir, Moeen Ali and Gudakesh Motie reduced Saint Lucia to 101 for 6 with du Plessis waging a lone battle. The skipper battled cramps but still didn’t give up, he batted deep into the innings despite wickets falling around him.

While Saint Lucia had made only 121 from 17 overs, du Plessis combined with Joseph to fetch some crucial runs in the final three overs.

The last over in particular from Junior Sinclair saw du Plessis hammer three sixes while Joseph managed to clear the ropes once, as the finish saw them limit the losing margin to 35 runs.

Brief Scores: Guyana Amazon Warriors 207/7 in 20 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 58, Shai Hope 56; David Wiese 3/43, Noor Ahmad 2/26) beat Saint Lucia Kings 172/7 in 20 overs (Faf du Plessis 92*; Imran Tahir 2/20, Moeen Ali 2/21) by 35 runs

“The master always has different plans” – TKR want to win CPL for retired team-mate Bravo

Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) captain Kieron Pollard says Dwayne Bravo’s loss for the remainder of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season is a heartbreaking one for the TT franchise and four-time champions.

On September 26, the 40-year-old Bravo, who had planned to retire from the CPL at the end of the season, announced his retirement from all cricket after sustaining a groin injury in the team’s 80-run loss to St Lucia Kings at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA), Tarouba on September 24.

Addressing the media at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain ahead of TKR’s clash with Barbados Royals at the BLCA on September 27, Pollard and coach Phil Simmons spoke to the magnitude of Bravo’s season-ending injury and his impact on the team.

“He has given cricket a lot. For us in the camp, it’s heartbreaking because we knew how hard he worked to finish this tournament and be with us. Unfortunately, the master always has different plans,” Pollard said.

“For him, it’s heart-wrenching, but as the champion will always say, ‘he has given it his all.’

“For us as team-mates and friends, we will try to do as much as possible to try and make him smile at the end of the tournament…he has had a wonderful career and he has represented us well as a nation and throughout the world.”

Simmons said the search was on for Bravo’s replacement and TKR were hoping to arrive at a final decision by the end of September 26.

The TKR coach said Bravo’s value went way beyond his on-field displays.

“Dwayne brings so much more than just cricket to the team. He’s always helping younger guys and he’s always giving advice to everyone. I think that’s one of the things that will be sorely missed – his advice while he’s in the team…we all want to say thank you for everything he has brought to TKR and all the teams he has played for around the world.”

Just moments before the press briefing, Bravo announced his retirement via Instagram.

The “champion” as he is called, posted an emotional goodbye to “21 years as a professional cricketer.”

Despite his current role as a senior player for TKR, Bravo said he chose to call it quits on his decorated career because his “body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns and the strain.”

His physical discomfort was visible during TKR’s last match against the Kings as the veteran allrounder injured himself in the seventh over of the match as he chased after a lofted shot by Faf du Plessis. Later in the match, he was forced to retire hurt after facing just two balls.

“I can’t put myself in a position where I might let down my team-mates, my fans or the teams I represent,” Bravo wrote.

Bravo played mainly T20 franchise cricket internationally, after retiring from international (West Indies) cricket in November 2021.

He also retired from the Indian Premier League before the 2023 season having won three titles with Chennai Super Kings.

A former Windies skipper, Bravo said that it was “time to face reality” on his T20 career.

“Dear Cricket,” he wrote. “Today is the day I say goodbye to the game that has given me everything. From the age of five, I knew this was what I wanted to do – this was the sport I was destined to play.

“I had no interest in anything else, and I dedicated my life to you. In return, you gave me the life I dreamed of for myself and my family.”

He said his career was filled with “many highs and a few lows” and “with a heavy heart,” the “Champion bids farewell.”

Bravo thanked his global fanbase for their unwavering support and love throughout the years “especially in TT.”

He closed by saying, “Though this ending is bittersweet, I have no regrets about my career or this decision. Now I look forward to my next chapter. See you soon on the other side.”

Bravo’s lengthy T20 career with the bat saw him score 6,970 runs across 582 matches with a high score of 70 not out. He also scored 20 half centuries.

Bravo took 631 wickets in his T20 career, and now bows out of the game as the leading wicket-taker in the format.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan (613 wickets) and Bravo’s TKR team-mate Sunil Narine (568 wickets) are second and third on the all-time T20 list.

Check Full Details: ‘Guyana Amazon Warriors’ manager Leon Johnson confirms Saim Ayub will not play in CPL 2024

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2024) continues with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots (SKN) taking on Guyana Amazon Warriors (GUY). Both sides will lock horns at the Warner Park, Basseterre, in St Kitts, on Thursday, September 5.

The Imran Tahir-led side has so far played only one game in the tournament and has managed to win that game over Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. With two points to their name, they are in the fourth position and hope to register their second win of the season.

Manager of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, former West Indies Test batter Leon Johnson yesterday confirmed to guyana chronicle com to that Pakistani opener Saim Ayub, who is presently playing against Bangladesh in a two-Test series, will not be available for the 2024 CPL.

Last year, the 22-year-old finished the CPL as the second highest run-scorer with 478 runs in 13 innings at an average of 43.45, and a strike rate of 142.26.

Only his Guyana Amazon Warriors team-mate Shai Hope was ahead of him with 481 runs at 53.44, and a strike rate of 140.23.

Ayub is involved in the Test series against Bangladesh, making 56 and 1 in the first Test which Bangladesh won by 10 wickets.

He scored 58 and 20 in the second Test, but at the end of the fourth day, Bangladesh are 42-0, needing 143 runs to win the two-Test series 2-0.

At the start of 2024, Ayub was given a surprise Test debut against Australia in Sydney.

In 2023, Ayub impressed in T20 leagues around the world, where he has played 85 T20s, most notably in the CPL.

Considered special enough to break the hallowed Babar Azam- Mohammad Rizwan opening partnership, he did not have the desired impact, and was dropped ahead of T20 World Cup 2024 after a litany of low scores.

Johnson, the most successful First-Class captain of West Indies domestic cricket with six titles, explained that the dashing left- hander has not been given an NOC by the Pakistan Board (PCB).

After his outstanding performance with the bat for the Guyana Franchise, he was named in the original ‘Warriors’ squad, and his anticipated presence at the top of the order will be missed this year. Johnson said that a replacement for the lad from Karachi has not been named as yet.

The ‘Warriors’, who beat Antigua and Barbuda Falcons off the final ball, will play their second in St. Kitts tomorrow from 19:00hrs, when they face off with the SKN Patriots.

West Indies’ Seales, Holder March Up Rankings After Fine Showing In Guyana

The West Indies pair of Jayden Seales and Jason Holder climbed up the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, emerging as the big winners in the updated list released on Wednesday.

Seales and Holder both performed well during the West Indies’ recent Test series against South Africa, despite the fact the Caribbean side fell to a 1-0 series defeat.

Seales collected nine wickets in the second Test in Guyana, with his six-wicket haul in the second innings of the contest seeing the 22-year-old claim his best Test figures of 6/61.

His superb performance in Guyana helped him gain 13 places on the Test rankings for bowlers and a new career-high rating in 13th place. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin continues to lead the Test bowling list with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and India’s Jasprit Bumrah sharing the second spot.

Holder also made good ground in all three categories, with the 32-year-old gaining two spots to move up to fifth behind Indian duo Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin on the latest rankings for Test all-rounders following good contributions with the bat and ball in Guyana.

The veteran star made an unbeaten half-century in the first innings of the second Test, pushing him up to fifth in the rankings for all-rounders and ensuring a seven-spot jump to equal 60th on the Test batters’ list.

With good performances in the series, players from the West Indies and South Africa make ground on the latest Test rankings.

Seales and Holder’s West Indies teammates Jomel Warrican (up two spots to 52nd) and Shamar Joseph (up 11 rungs to 54th) also gained some ground on the list for Test bowlers, while South Africa seamer Wiaan Mulder rose 27 places to 65th following his six wickets and Player of the Match performance.

South Africa duo Aiden Markram (up two places to 21st) and Kyle Verreynne (up 16 spots to equal 46th) were the biggest eye-catchers on the Test rankings for batters, with Joe Root maintaining his place as the No.1 ranked batter ahead of England’s Test series with Sri Lanka.

“Eyes already on the next T20 World Cup in 2026” – Daren Sammy on West Indies T20I squad for South Africa series

Rovman Powell will lead a strong West Indies outfit against South Africa in the three-match T20I series that begins in Trinidad from August 24.

After a 1-0 loss to South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship series, West Indies will aim to continue their good run in T20Is as they take on the Proteas.

West Indies have won four of their last five bilateral T20I series, and missed out on a place in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at home after losing to South Africa.

“Facing a strong South Africa side is an excellent opportunity for our team to reset and refocus with our game plan,” Daren Sammy, West Indies’ white-ball coach, said in a CWI statement.

“We have played them recently and had mixed results, so this should be an exciting and important series. I’m confident in the squad we’ve selected, and with eyes already on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know the guys will be keen to show their hunger for success,” he added.

The squad is notably without senior all-rounders Andre Russell and Jason Holder. While Russell requested a period of rest and recovery, Holder has been rested following five back-to-back Tests against England and South Africa.

The squad is strengthened by the additions of Alick Athanaze, who shone in the Test series, and 22-year-old pacer Matthew Forde, who last played in the bilateral series against South Africa in May.

The Cricket West Indies medical team will cater to the duo during this period, Miles confirmed.

South Africa had earlier named their squad for the three-match series. The three T20Is will be played between August 24-28.

West Indies T20I squad: Rovman Powell (c), Roston Chase (vc), Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Fabian Allen, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd.

Team management: Daren Sammy (Head Coach), Rayon Griffith (Assistant Coach), Floyd Reifer (Assistant Coach), Ramesh Subasinghe (Assistant Coach), Denis Byam (Physiotherapist), Ronald Rogers (Strength & Conditioning Coach), Fitzbert Alleyne (Team Masseuse), Rawl Lewis (Team Manager), Avenash Seetaram (Team Analyst), John Phillips (Team Media & Content Officer)

MATCH SCHEDULE

25 August – 2nd T20I West Indies v South Africa at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy
27 August – 3rd T20I West Indies v South Africa at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy

This will be the first time that WI Men’s Internationals will be part of a doubleheader with a Women’s franchise competition, and cricket fans will be able to see the best male and female players taking part in matches on the same ticket.

The WCPL takes place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad between the 21 and 29 August.

Shimron Hetmyer retains spot as West Indies name T20I squad for South Africa series; Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph absent

West Indies have rested some big names like all-rounders Andre Russell and Jason Holder alongside star seamer Alzarri Joseph for the three-match T20Is against South Africa at home, starting August 24.

While opener Brandon King also misses out on the cut, as he continues to recover from the side strain he suffered during the T20 World Cup in June, Shimron Hetmyer, who didn’t play a single game in the tournament, retained his place.

Meanwhile, Rovman Powell continues to lead the star-studded T20I side, with Shai Hope tipped to open alongside Johnson Charles, while rookie Alick Athanaze is a backup. The biggest plus, however, is to have superstar batters Nicholas Pooran and Hetmyer in the middle order, with Romario Shepherd there to take care of lower-order duties.

Though Shamar Joseph retains his place following a superb show in the Test series, CWC picked four spinners in Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, Chase and returning Fabian Allen.

West Indies squad for SA T20Is –

Rovman Powell (captain), Roston Chase (vice-captain), Alick Athanaze, Fabian Allen, Johnson Charles, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd

The three-match series is scheduled for 23 – 27 August 2024 in Trinidad.

In the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, West Indies is number four, and South Africa is number five.
