WATCH VIDEO: Evin Lewis shines with the first century of CPL 2024 for St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots

In a thrilling encounter at Warner Park, St. Kitts, Evin Lewis showcased his batting prowess with a stunning century, but it was the Saint Lucia Kings who emerged victorious by five wickets in the fifth match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024.

Evin Lewis’ magnificent ton

Lewis delivered a breathtaking performance for the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, scoring an explosive unbeaten 100 runs off just 54 balls in their match against the Saint Lucia Kings. His innings was a masterclass in T20 batting, featuring a remarkable display of power hitting that included seven fours and nine sixes.

Lewis began his innings under pressure, with the Patriots losing their captain, Andre Fletcher, for just one run in the opening over due to a run-out. However, he quickly took charge, forming a formidable partnership with Kyle Mayers. Together, they propelled the Patriots to a strong position, scoring 54 runs during the powerplay.

The highlight of Lewis’s innings was his ability to dominate the bowlers. He reached his fifty in just 24 balls, showcasing his aggressive intent. In the eighth over, Lewis struck three consecutive sixes off Mikkel Govia, sending a clear message to the Kings’ bowlers. He continued to accelerate, hitting a six and two fours off Alzarri Joseph, which helped the Patriots reach 100 runs by the end of the 10th over.

Despite a rain interruption in the 19th over, Lewis remained focused and brought up his century in the final over of the innings. His remarkable performance helped the Patriots post a formidable total of 201 runs for three wickets in 20 overs.

Here’s the video:

Lewis and Mayers’ record partnership in CPL

The partnership between Mayers and Lewis was a sight to behold. Both batters played aggressive cricket, hitting sixes at will and racing to their half-centuries in style. As the innings progressed, the duo continued to dominate, setting their sights on individual centuries. Their partnership surpassed the previous record for the highest partnership in CPL, a feat that showcased their exceptional batting skills.

Despite losing Fletcher early on, Lewis and Mayers quickly stabilized the innings, scoring 54 runs in the powerplay. Lewis reached his half-century in just 24 balls, while Mayers followed suit with a 37-ball fifty. The Patriots ended their innings with a run rate of 10.05, setting a challenging score of 201 for the Kings to beat.

Saint Lucia Kings’ remarkable chase

In response, the Saint Lucia Kings faced early setbacks, losing their captain Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles cheaply. However, Tim Seifert and Bhanuka Rajapaksa led a remarkable recovery. Seifert scored a blistering 64 runs off just 27 balls, while Rajapaksa remained not out at 68 off 35 balls. Their partnership of 103 runs for the fifth wicket proved crucial as they counter-attacked the Patriots’ bowlers, reaching the target with 2.4 overs to spare.

David Wiese also played a vital role, finishing the innings with an unbeaten 34 runs off 20 balls. The Kings’ innings was marked by aggressive batting, with Seifert hitting six sixes and Rajapaksa adding four of his own. The Kings ultimately chased down the target, finishing at 202 for 5 in 17.2 overs, demonstrating their resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

This match highlighted the thrilling nature of T20 cricket, where individual brilliance from Lewis was overshadowed by a collective team effort from the Saint Lucia Kings.

With this victory, the Kings started their CPL campaign on a high note, while the Patriots will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches. The match not only showcased explosive batting but also set the stage for an exciting season ahead in the CPL.

Caribbean Premier League and Cricket West Indies in talks about secondary T20 tournament – Check details here

There is a talk between Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) are to Caribbean could have another Twenty20 competition.

This, as CPL’s CEO Pete Russell and CWI’s vice-president Azim Bassarath indicate that discussions regarding another competition, are on course.

That competition, which would complement the CPL, would be geared towards unearthing and developing fresh talent for the regional game.

Russell, while declaring CPL’s commitment to play its part in the process, pointed out that it is not their role to unearth the next generation of players for the Caribbean.

“Yes, we’re going to be part of the solution, but I think that (unearthing players) is probably CWI’s remit, not ours,” Russell told Trinidad Express.

“We feel that’s an important part of any cricket system, even CPL. So, we want to support that in as big a way as possible. I’m hoping we can get to a place where we can put that tournament on,” he added.

Former West Indies white-ball skipper Kieron Pollard and a CWI independent review committee comprising Patrick Thompson, Brian Lara and Mickey Arthur called for the hosting of a secondary T20 tournament to properly develop the next generation of Caribbean T20 players.

It is for that reason, why Russell and CWI have engaged discussions.

“A lot of planning has gone into it. It’s down, as it always is, to dollars and cents, so we’re just seeing how best to do it. We’ve got a lot of work to do before we get there but look everyone is committed to doing it,” Russell declared.

Meanwhile, Bassarath said CWI and CPL have recognized that the talent is not really coming through in any part of the Caribbean as was the case when the CPL first started.

“There are discussions going on and I am quite sure that something has to be done to make sure that the talent we have in Caribbean is exposed and developed, and it will serve CPL’s interest as well to make sure we continue to produce quality cricketers that are needed to ensure the tournament, which is the second best T20 franchise league in the world, continues to flourish,” Bassarath shared.

“I think they (CPL) will have a part to play in getting involved in the development of the game and helping to produce quality players that is needed for the CPL and for West Indies cricket,” he noted.

CPL 2023: Top 5 bowling performances of the tournament – Check full list here!

After 40 days of scintillating action, this year’s edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2023) came to an end today with the final between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders going in favor of the former.

The summit clash was a one-sided affair as TKR, led by Kieron Pollard, failed to turn up on the big night. Pollard’s men were bowled out for a paltry score of 94, a total that was chased down without the Warriors needing to break a sweat.

This is the first time that the Warriors have won the CPL, having previously endured rotten luck in five finals. As has been the case over the years, the Warriors performed extremely well, finishing the league stage as the table-toppers.

They lost the first qualifier but bounced back quickly to win the second one to proceed to the final, where they humbled TKR to cap off what has been a magnificent run for them.

The Warriors’ victory was also a triumph for their captain, Imran Tahir. The veteran leg-spinner led the team with aplomb and was instrumental in their success.

The tournament in general, too, was a special one as the six teams played some wonderful cricket, the crowds were enthusiastic, and there were some thrilling matches.

The quality of cricket was top-notch, and the season will be remembered fondly by fans. As will some of the individual performances in all three departments.

On that note, here’s a look at the top 5 bowling performances of the CPL 2023 season:

#5 Mohammed Amir (4-19 vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in CPL 2023)

In the 27th game of the 13th edition of the CPL, Mohammed Amir won a lot of hearts courtesy of his fine bowling.

The game, which was held at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, saw the Jamaica Tallawahs face the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, the Tallawahs put up a total of 178 despite getting off to a terrible start.

The game was expected to be a closely contested affair, but Mohammed Amir’s sensational bowling didn’t allow for that. He picked up a four-wicket haul and conceded only 19 runs in 3.3 overs.

His wickets included those of Andre Fletcher and Yannic Cariah, the former one of the most dangerous strikers of the ball and the latter, who was well-set at 65.

Thanks to Amir and the other bowlers, the total was easily defended as the Tallawahs were bowled out for just 119.

#4 Dwayne Pretorius(4-27 vs Trinbago Knight Riders, CPL 2023 Final)

In the high-octane summit clash earlier today, the Guyana Amazon Warriors bowled the Trinbago Knight Riders out for just 94 before completing the chase with six overs to spare.

The hero of this stunning performance was South African Dwayne Pretorius, who picked up four wickets in the first inning while conceding just 26 runs.

One of his four wickets was the crucial one of Nicholas Pooran, who,o on his day, could single-handedly destroy an opposition. More than his strikes, it was his consistent lines and lengths that created an impact. He also found a little bit of swing to trouble the batters.

Pretorius, for his magnificent outing in the big game, was declared the player-of-the-match. His brilliance with the ball is one of the huge reasons behind the success of the Warriors, as he ended up being the highest wicket-taker of the tournament.

#3 Romario Shepherd (3-7 vs Jaimaica Tallawahs in CPL 2023)

The Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs squared off in the 11th game of the tournament at Warner Park in St. Kitts. The Warriors batted first and notched up a total of 210 on the board thanks to half-centuries by Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul.

With the likes of Brandon King, Imad Wasim, and Fabien Allen part of the side, the Tallawahs had all the might to chase down the total.

However, Romario Shepherd produced a stunning effort with the ball, which put them on the backfoot. He returned figures of 3-7, dismissing Brandon King, Sharmarh Brooks, and Amir Jangoo in the process.

His spell with the new ball reduced the Tallawahs to 7-3, and as hard as Wasim and Allen tried, the game was gone. The Warriors defeated the Tallawahs by 34 runs, and Shepherd was declared the player of the-match.

#2 Salman Irshad (4-27 vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in CPL 2023)

Jamaica Tallawahs’ Salman Irshad produced fantastic returns against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in game 7 of the season.

The Tallawahs won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that was validated by Irshad’s superb bowling. Irshad ended with figures of 4-27, picking up some huge wickets and creating a massive impact on the proceedings.

He dismissed Andre Fletcher, Corbin Bosch and Ambati Rayudi in the very same over to leave the Patriots in a hole. He later returned to dismiss a well-set Joshua Da Silva just before the commencement of the death overs.

His high-quality skills helped the Tallawahs reduce the Patriots’ score to 156, which was chased down with a lot of ease. Irshad was rightly chosen as the player of the-match.

#1 Matthew Forde (4-23 vs Jamaica Tallawahs, CPL 2023 Eliminator)

In the Eliminator between the Saint Lucia Kings and Jamaica Tallawahs, the former could only manage to score 125 in the first inning.

The Tallawahs bowled immaculately, posing different questions to the batters who had no answers. For the Kings, none of the batters apart from Roston Chase got going.

The chase was expected to be an easy one, and that was the case as the Kings won the game with 16 deliveries to spare.

However, 21-year-old Matthew Forde bowled with a big heart despite there being very few runs in the bag. Forde picked up 4 out of the 5 wickets that fell and ended with exceptional figures of 4-23.

His first two wickets brought some life to the game, and despite the loss, his returns in a high-pressure game were a massive positive for the Warriors, who eventually ended up winning the tournament.

Forde’s 4-27 in the eliminator is the standout performance of the tournament, not least because of the magnitude of the game.

Imran Tahir Breaks MS Dhoni’s Elite Captaincy Record After Winning CPL 2023 Title With Guyana Amazon Warriors

South African legend Imran Tahir broke an elite captaincy record set by MS Dhoni earlier this year by winning the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 title with the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

At the age of 44, Tahir became the oldest captain in history to win a T20 tournament. Dhoni won his fifth IPL title as captain at the age of 41 earlier this year.

The age of 40 is generally considered the age of retirement for cricketers. However, in the modern era of cricket, the players have continued to play even after the age of 40. They have worked very hard on their fitness and quit the longer formats of the game early so that they can extend their careers.

Quite a few cricketers aged more than 40 are not only active in T20 or T10 tournaments, but they are also winning championships.

Tahir, was appointed as Guyana’s captain before the start of the CPL 2023, and he managed to do what no other player was able to do till today.

Under his captaincy, Guyana finished at the top of the CPL 2023 points table by winning eight matches out of 10 played in the league stage. But they suffered a shocking defeat in the first qualifier against TKR by seven wickets. However, in the final, they managed to take revenge for it by securing a win for the ages.

Tahir, who played his last match for South Africa in July 2019 and his last IPL game in April 2021, finished as the second-leading wicket-taker in CPL 2023. In a total of 13 matches played during the course of the season, he picked up 18 wickets at an economy of just 6.22.

In the final, Tahir picked up two wickets after a conceding just eight runs in his quota of four overs.

He accounted for the dismissal of Andre Russell and DJ Bravo in the CPL 2023 summit clash.

CPL 2023: Final, Match Highlights: Guyana Amazon Warriors win maiden CPL title beating Trinbago Knight Riders by 9 wickets

It was a historic night at Providence as Guyana Amazon Warriors won the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final with a 9 wicket win over the Trinbago Knight Riders, ensuring a maiden CPL title for the franchise.

It was the Amazon Warriors’ sixth trip to the final and this time they held their nerve to come out on top, dismissing TKR for 94 off 18.1 overs before reaching 99 for one with six overs to spare to seal a comprehensive victory.

There was an air of expectation around the ground with many expecting 2023 to be the year of the Amazon Warriors and hopes soared after Tahir won the toss and sent the visitors to bat first.

Seven times in ten finals teams chasing have come out on top and that formula held true again last night with TKR struggling to get going, slipping to 44 for five in the seventh over with big guns, captain Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Chadwick Walton, all falling cheaply on a night when they needed to deliver.

In the Warriors’ turn at the crease, when the final runs were scored by Saim Ayub, Tahir dropped to his knees in tears.

“This is a special feeling. A lot of people said a lot of negative things before this game and when I took the captaincy but I am a really proud man, proud father and a very proud captain,” Tahir said after the game.

“I wanted to give the boys and the nation this so I am very grateful to the Almighty,” he added.

Restricting the TKR batting was the first step for the Warriors and Dwaine Pretorius delivered with the ball, grabbing four wickets to lead the charge.

Walton opened the scoring for TKR with a four through the covers off Pretorius, while fellow opener Mark Deyal got into the act with a straight six off the South African bowler, followed by a cut for four.

But the early TKR burst was cut short with Deyal being bowled for 16 as TKR lost their first wicket with the score on 24 in the third over.

The visitors lost another wicket in the next over with Walton trapped lbw for ten by a delivery from Romario Shepherd that didn’t bounce as much as the batter would have anticipated.

At 29 for two, TKR’s leading batter Pooran had a lot of work to do but was unable to step up this time around, caught by Shepherd off Pretorius for one, before Gudakesh Motie’s double strike—with the scalps of the TKR skipper for a duck and Akeal Hosein for one—put the hosts in command.

Russell (3) was TKR’s last hope to get to a competitive score but he too failed to get going, skying a Tahir delivery to Pretorius as the visitors slipped to 49 for six in the tenth over.

It was all downhill after that with Keacy Carty’s 38 off 45 the only bright spot for the four-time champions with the bat.

The total was never really going to challenge the Warriors but TKR made a fist of it with Akeal Hosein removing Keemo Paul for 11 and mystery spinner Sunil Narine keeping things tight in the six-over powerplay, with Guyana progressing to 29 for one which was their lowest powerplay score of the season.

But TKR could not contain the leading batters in the tournament, Shai Hope and Saim Ayub, for long with the pair putting on an unbroken 84-run stand for the second wicket to seal the long-awaited triumph for the Guyana franchise.

Ayub was unbeaten on 52 off 41 balls while Hope ended on 32 not out of 32 balls to cap off a dominant performance in the final.

Summarised Scores:

TKR 94 (18.1 overs) (Keacy Carty 38; Dwaine Pretorius 4/26, Gudakesh Motie 2/7, Imran Tahir 2/8) vs GUYANA AMAZON WARRIORS 99-1 (14 overs (Saim Ayub 52 n.o., Shai Hope 32 n.o.)

Guyana Amazon Warriors win by nine wickets

“Lot of people said a lot of negative things, I kept believing in myself” – Imran Tahir captain on winning the title

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have done what they do best!

Throughout this year’s edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), they played really well and accomplished their supporters’ hopes as Tahir led Guyana Amazon Warriors their First ever CPL trophy Win with The convincing 9-wicket victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders, the Four time champions, on Sunday.

It was one of those games that you had to watch live to really appreciate the hunger the Warriors seem to have this year.

And captain Imran Tahir, who should be an honorary Guyanese by this point, seems to be the hungriest of us all.

To be fair, has there been a game when Tahir didn’t turn things around, or try to turn things around, with his bowling?

And whether it’s asking spin extraordinaire Gudakesh Motie to defend six overs in a last-over thriller in an earlier game against the Barbados Royals or backing the boys and their capabilities, hasn’t he been a good captain overall?

What a performance by GAW. They have been on fire after inserting their opponents in. Just 94 from TKR in a big final. None except Keacy Carty got going. They kept losing wickets and never recovered.

No-one gave Carty company as they left one after the other. Pretorius with a four-fer and he was the pick of the bowlers. Took out the big wicket of Pooran.

The spinners – Motie and Tahir too were superb through the middle overs. A very poor performance from TKR

Shai hope (32) and Ayub (52) chase down it esaily for GAW and claimed their maiden CPL title.

Imran Tahir is very emotional at the WINNING MOMEMT. He gets warm hugs from his teammates.

“It’s a special feeling. Lot of people said a lot of negative things. Really proud father, player and captain (on winning the title). I just want to thank the almighty. I kept believing in myself. Love you everyone, thank you CPL” says an emotional Tahir.

After five losses in the finals previously, they’ve got the crown with their sixth attempt. It’s only fitting that the Warriors are winners this season.

They have the top two run getters in their team – Hope and Ayub. They also have the top two wicket takers of the season in their team – Pretorius and Tahir.

After a no result first game, they pulled off six successive wins and only lost once in the 10-game league stage.

“We are hoping that Keemo Paul will be fit for the final” – Imran Tahir talking about the preparations for the final

Trinbago Knight Riders were too good for Guyana Amazon Warriors in their last clash in the qualifiers and they will fancy their chances of repeating that feat in this final of the Caribbean Premier League.

That seven-wicket success was an eye-catching one and while the Amazon Warriors responded well by thrashing Jamaica Tallawahs to book their spot in the final, they would need to produce a big performance to overturn the result of the last clash between the two teams.

Asked if the opposition had a psychological advantage coming into the CPL final, Tahir instead focused on his team’s strengths.

“Someone is going to cross the line, and I feel that this team has all the ingredients to do this. We truly believe this. It’s just a game that we have to believe a bit more. Help each other more like we have been during the whole competition. I truly believe that the kind of cricket we have been playing the whole competition, we deserve to be in the final,” said Tahir.

“If you look back over the whole competition, we have beaten everybody. On the day, we need to play better cricket. I am really looking forward to the game tomorrow,” the Amazon Warriors skipper added.

Asked if the Keemo Pual fit the final, Tahir said,

“We just need to focus to play the game with freedom and execute our plans. We are hoping that he (Keemo Paul) will be fit for the final and he really wants to do something special for the team. ” Guyana skipper Tahir said on Sunday Final vs TKR.

Guyana Amazon Warriors are placed at the top spot in the Caribbean Premier League 2023 points table with 8 wins and one loss from their 10 matches of the league. The team has 17 points.

Shai Hope is the top run-scorer for Guyana Amazon Warriors with 449 runs at a strike rate of 144. He has struck 24 sixes and 31 fours. Saim Ayub has also made 426 runs at a strike rate of 144.

Imran Tahir has been the best bowler for Guyana Amazon Warriors and has picked up 16 wickets while bowling at an average of 17 and an economy rate of 6.64.

Knight Riders skipper Kieron Pollard said that losing their previous five finals does not give his team an advantage but added that it would be “unfortunate” for their opposition if they were to lose.

“Honestly, I don’t think we are playing any psychological games or anything like that. We are worrying about what TKR needs to worry about. I am not sure what they are thinking about psychologically or otherwise,” said Pollard.

“What I can safely say is that it is another game of cricket for us and we will play it as such. Let’s see what happens. It would be nice if we lift a fifth trophy, and it might be unfortunate for the opposition,” he added.

The Knight Riders have won four of their last five games and record another success to lift the trophy.

Trinbago Knight Riders are placed at the 2nd spot in the Caribbean Premier League 2023 points table with 6 wins and 3 losses from their 10 matches of the league. The team has 13 points.

Nicholas Pooran is the top run-scorer for Trinbago Knight Riders with 290 runs at a strike rate of 159. He has struck 20 sixes and 22 fours. Martin Guptill has also made 262 runs at a strike rate of 115.

Waqar Salamkheil has been the best bowler for Trinbago Knight Riders and has picked up 11 wickets while bowling at an average of 15 and an economy rate of 6.46.
