Attorney Chevy A. Devonish, first Guyanese lawyer selected by multinational law firm for prestigious program

Attorney-at-law and university lecturer, Chevy A. Devonish, has been selected by multinational firm Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP to take part in the Firm’s prestigious ‘Foreign Attorney Program’.

Multinational firm Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP has selected Attorney-at-law and university lecturer, Chevy A. Devonish, to participate in the firm’s prestigious ‘External Lawyer Program’.

Chevy A. Devonish is the first Guyanese selected for this non-government initiative. Recruitment and screening will be done solely by the company, a press release from the Attorney General’s Chambers said on Thursday.

Arnold & Porter is a multinational firm employing almost one thousand attorneys practicing in approximately 40 areas in 14 offices across the globe.

Practice areas include international corporate law, international financing and international arbitration.

According to the press release, it is expected that Devonish will be an active member of the firm’s international corporate, financing and, time permitting, international arbitration practices at the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office until July 2023.

The release noted that since Devonish is not licensed to practice law in the United States, he will not function as an attorney-at-law during the program, but will, among other things, actively observe and participate in cases along with Arnold & Porter attorneys.

“These are areas of increasing relevance and importance, due to the unprecedented commercial growth prompted by oil and gas exploration and development in Guyana. I look forward to learning from Arnold & Porter, and returning to leverage that knowledge to assist Guyana’s development. Arnold & Porter is an ideal place to develop these skills as the Firm routinely represents sovereign states in these areas,” Devonish is quoted as saying in the press release.

He said he is also looking to explore ways in which he can employ the skills he would have accumulated in journalism, lecturing, and legal practice in Guyana to the benefit of Arnold & Porter.

“Guyana is developing, but Guyanese have much to offer the world,” Devonish is further quoted as saying.

Arnold & Porter’s Foreign Attorney Program is designed to allow foreign attorneys to understand, firsthand, the variety of services the firm provides for its clients.

Foreign attorneys observe and participate in US law firm practice, and learn about various legal proceedings.

They also attend seminars and training programs on US legal issues and international legal issues, and actively observe and participate in cases in their areas of practice, including attending client meetings, hearings, strategy sessions and reviewing relevant case documents.

The participants also undertake legal research and writing, and work collaboratively with Arnold & Porter attorneys on various matters.

“Both the Attorney General’s Chambers and the University of Guyana are immensely proud of Devonish as he proceeds on this endeavor, and look forward to his return,” the release noted.

Devonish graduated as valedictorian of the Hugh Wooding Law School’s graduating class of 2019, and was admitted to the Bar in Guyana in November 2019.

He was then appointed State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs in February 2020 where he has since performed with distinction, being appointed to various cases of national significance, including Election Petitions 88 and 99 of 2020.

Additionally, since being admitted to the Bar in Guyana, Devonish has lectured and or tutored in Public International Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Real Property, and Politics at the University of Guyana.

“I felt there was something on the other side to do.. but I’m proud to be Guyanese”- Letitia Guyana-born actress Wright after returning home

Guyana-born actress Letitia Wright, widely known for her role in the Black Panther movie franchise, arrives in Guyana yesterday. There she received a warm welcome on her return.

At age seven, Letitia Wright experienced culture shock when her family migrated to Tottenham, London, from Guyana.

After a flight from the United Kingdom to Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, which arrived at 22:22 hrs, Wright was met with special performances by the National School of Dance, steel-pan music and a personal welcome by the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond.

But the international star became more emotional as she hugged her father and grandmother who were in the reception team.

Years later, drenched in big shows and receptions abroad, Wright built her career as an actress in tears.

She told the press that when the plane landed, she remembered her last day in Guyana.

In expressing her gratitude for the warm reception, an emotional Wright recalled living in Guyana before migrating to the United Kingdom.

“I said bye to my friends and I came to the airport with my family.”

Wright shared that after checking in, she and her mom missed the flight while bidding farewell to everyone.

“I don’t know why I felt this at the age of eight but I felt that there was something for me to do. And God had a way of aligning everything. But I didn’t know that I would go away for so long. So, as I was landing, I was remembering that little girl and how frustrated she was in not knowing how much she would miss her country and how much she would mean to this country.”

“I just went to the UK and used the opportunity and God aligned me with acting. But he always aligned me with it. I was in my yard in Goed Intent singing Backstreet Boys songs… I would just be singing, dancing and acting, not knowing that God would use that in the years to come to inspire other people…”

“I come from a humble family, humble background and I just used every opportunity that I could to just use my talent for good… So, as you see me, I pray that you’re inspired no matter how old you are, no matter what you want to do… You continue to chase your dreams and you continue to use your talent and gifts for purpose because it’s allowed to travel the world. It’s allowed me to be honoured, it’s allowed me to honour other people and it’s allowed me to bring great honour to my country.”

Wright played the lead role of scientist “Shuri” and now Queen of Wakanda in the Black Panther film franchise. In her role, she won the hearts of her fans across the world as well as in her homeland.

“I’m proud to be Guyanese. I’ve always celebrated the fact that I am Guyanese. I celebrate that more than anything. So, I am just thankful for the welcome… You guys really went above and beyond to show me love and I promise to always honour you and show you love as well.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a box office success after its release in theatres worldwide last November.

Soon after its release, President Dr Irfan Ali praised the star for her role and wished her a successful career. He also invited her to visit Guyana.

During her stay in Guyana, Wright will visit several locations in Guyana as she meets President Ali and celebrates her success in the film industry.

Among her activities, she will give an inspirational talk to young actors in Guyana. She will also watch her film with a group of Guyanese.

Young Guyanese Alicia Duggin achieves her childhood dream of becoming a heavy-duty equipment operator

Alicia Duggin has always been interested in the profession of heavy equipment operator that her father and older brother hold.

After completing her secondary education a few weeks ago, she set her sights on pursuing the Heavy Equipment Operation (HDEO) course offered by the Industrial Training Board.

She made what she believed to be a “no-brainer” decision, and it was evident when she began the grueling program and quickly rose to the highest student rank among the boys.

“I knew this would be my profession the moment I sat in that 236D skid steer loader and cranked that key.”

“The device had ignited a spark within me and made me willing to get my hands filthy, if necessary,” the young woman expressed.

Alicia Duggin recalled the challenges she faced during the program, including harsh comments from her male colleagues.

But Alicia said she used the criticism to prove them wrong and drive her to pursue her dream.

She did just that by graduating first in her class.

The easy part of the program, according to Alicia, was finally finishing the course. Soon she started looking for a job.

“I applied at numerous companies and received responses from all of them, but I chose Avinash Contracting and Scrap Metal Inc. because it would be advantageous to me in the long-term,” she explained.

This, however, is not the conclusion of her story; rather, it is only the beginning. The young lady thanked the Board of Industrial Training for allowing her the opportunity to realize a childhood aspiration.

25-year-old Lindener opens new seafood outlet at Campbellville

A 25-year-old Lindener, Trevis Johnson, is looking to make his mark as an entrepreneur after expanding his brainchild, Superior Seafoods, with a new storefront at Campbellville.

According to a Facebook post from the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Guyana, Superior Seafoods was founded by Johnson in August 2015, after he recognized that there was the need for a reliable source of quality seafood products for commercial use, particularly by companies whose operations are based in remote areas.

“This need has grown with the rapid expansion of offshore activities in Guyana’s booming oil- and-gas sector,” AMCHAM said.

It is for this reason that Superior kinds of seafood endeavors to meet this need by providing a customized mix of quality, local seafood products at the volume and frequency required by each customer.

Both in-store pickup and purchases as well as online ordering and delivery are now available to customers.

The outlet offers fillets of trout, Banga-mary, butterfish, shark, and many other fish, as well as steaks of snapper and trout, prawns, and much more.

Damar Hamlin showing ‘remarkable improvement over past 24 hours,’ Bills say

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is showing “remarkable improvement” over the past 24 hours, the team said in a statement Thursday morning, although he remains “critically ill” in a Cincinnati ICU nearly three days after suffering a harrowing cardiac arrest on the field that sent shockwaves through the NFL.

“While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact,” the Bills said in a statement. “His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress.”

Hamlin’s agent, Ronald Butler, told The Associated Press that Hamlin was awake and has been able to grip the hands of family members at his hospital bedside.

The developments came as the Bills were scheduled to return to practice on Thursday for the first time since Hamlin collapsed when his heart stopped after making a tackle and was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center during the first quarter of Buffalo’s game against the Bengals on Monday night.

The second-year player spent the past two days sedated and listed in critical condition.

Bills rookie cornerback Kaiir Elam posted a message Thursday on Twitter that said Hamlin “is doing better, awake and showing signs of improvement.”

The Bills’ announcement comes as they prepare to play a home game against the New England Patriots, and with the team still dealing with the shock of seeing their teammate collapse on the field, his heart not beating.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick called the update on Hamlin’s health encouraging.

“Life is bigger than this game. And I think this is one of those humbling moments for all of us,” Belichick said.

As to how his players were dealing with preparations for the game scheduled for Sunday, he said they are navigating it by the moment.

“I think we’re all doing the best that we can,” Belichick said. “All of those questions are out of our control. I’m not going to worry about any of those. We’re trying to control what we can control. That’s what we’re doing here and how we’re doing it. And we’re doing the best we can.”

After returning home early Tuesday once the game was suspended, the Bills held meetings and a walkthrough practice without any media availability on Wednesday. On Thursday, players were spotted arriving at the facility, though the team has not yet released a practice schedule.

Numerous players across the league — former teammates and those who didn’t know Hamlin until Monday — voiced their support, while saying they were shaken by what unfolded in front of a North American TV audience.

Colts safety Rodney Thomas made the two-hour drive from Indianapolis to Cincinnati on Tuesday just to be by the side of his former high school teammate.

“He’s a fighter. I know he’s a fighter and there’s no other thought in my mind other than him walking out under his own power,” Thomas said Wednesday.

Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, who spent the previous four seasons playing for Buffalo, had dinner delivered to the hospital for Hamlin’s family and medical staff.

Hamlin’s marketing representative, Jordon Rooney, said Wednesday that the player’s family was buoyed by the words and acts of kindness.

“They are elated right now,” Rooney said. “Damar is still their first concern. But for them, they always look at how they can turn a somewhat troubling situation into a good one. The bounce back from this, for him and his family is going to be incredible.”

What remains unclear is whether the NFL will reschedule the Bills’ game against the Bengals, which has major implications in determining the top spot in the AFC. The playoffs are set to open on Jan. 14.

The Chiefs (13-3) have a half-game lead over Buffalo (12-3), with the Bills owning the tiebreaker after beating Kansas City this season. The Bengals (11-4) are currently the third seed and have also defeated the Chiefs.

Hamlin was hurt in the first quarter when he was struck squarely in the chest while making what appeared to be a routine tackle of Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin briefly got up and adjusted his facemask before collapsing backward.

Hamlin was selected by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 2021 draft out of Pitt. He spent his rookie season limited to special teams roles, and took over the starting safety job in Week 3 in place of veteran Micah Hyde, who remains sidelined by a neck injury.

Two Guyanese mothers get new houses for Christmas – Check Details

Rominia Benedict, 29, her husband Parmannand Drepaul, 38, and the couple’s six children were on Christmas morning presented with a new and furnished house by President Dr. Irfaan Ali as a Christmas gift. The houses were constructed  under his ‘Men on a Mission initiative

Wendy Williams’ new house

One week ago, Benedict had appealed for assistance to ensure she and her children have some comfort for Christmas.

She had been living in a small shack that was not large enough for the family to sleep in comfortably.

Additionally, financial constraints made it difficult for the children to be adequately provided for, many times going without meals.

President Ali showed up on site Christmas morning to deliver the house to the family at Bloomfield, Region Six.

He said this was an example which shows the oneness of the Guyanese people as he pointed out that while it was his initiative, the house was built by a single individual and furnished by another.

He pointed to it as being a good example of the government and the private sector partnership.
