IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad appoint Brian Lara as head coach after parting ways with Former head coach Tom Moody

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody, who was the head coach of the Sunrise Hyderabad franchise, will not return as the head coach in the upcoming IPL season, SRH said in a statement.

Moody returned to Sunrisers as director of cricket in 2021, with Australian Trevor Bayliss as head coach. It was not a good year for Sunrisers that year and they had to finish last with three wins. With that setback, Bayliss stepped down as head coach, and Moody took over as the franchise’s head coach.

A two-time coach, between 2013 and 2019, he has successfully guided Sunrisers to the playoffs five times and won the IPL Championship in 2016.

However, Moody’s second season as head coach was fraught with adversity. In 2022, the Sunrisers finished eighth in the 10-team tournament with six wins and eight losses. Accordingly, they were the weakest team in terms of wins in the last two seasons. In 28 matches, SRH had 9 wins, 18 losses, and one draw.

Accordingly, former West Indian legend Brian Lara has been appointed as the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for the 2023 IPL season, replacing Tom Moody. Lara was a strategic advisor and batting coach for SRH last season and this appointment is his first assignment as a head coach of a T20 team.

SRH on Saturday announced that Lara will replace Moody as the head coach for the 2023 IPL season.

Also in a statement, SRH thanked former coach moody and wished him well in his future endeavours.

“As his term with us draws to an end, we would like thank Tom for his contributions to SRH. It has been a much cherished journey over the years, and we wish him the very best for future endeavours.”

Moody will also be the Director of Cricket for the Desert Vipers, one of the six franchises in the new ILT20, which will begin in the UAE in January 2023.
