St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKN) will open their CPL title defense against Jamaica Tallawahs (JAM) in the opening match of the Caribbean Premier League 2022 at Warner Park on Thursday, September 1. The match will start at 7.00 PM local time.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have just won the inaugural 6ixty 2022 tournament and seem in great form.

Upon closer inspection of squad depth, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are the strongest side on paper and are likely to begin their CPL title defense with a convincing win.

Defending champions and they will have their successful captain Dwayne Bravo captaining them again this season as well.

Bravo is one of the best T20 players in history and he told reporters that his goal as captain of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will be to mentor the younger players, including his brother Darren, to find form.

“I am very excited. Last season, I made a decision to leave TKR and challenge myself differently and in a different way to keep myself motivated for the game and to try and help others develop their game and their cricket,” Bravo told.

“I think I made the right decision at the right time and luckily enough last season we won the trophy which gave St Kitts and Nevis Patriots their first-ever CPL title.

At a media conference yesterday, Bravo said the team is excited and took many lessons from their games.

“A few days ago, (we won the first-ever 6ixty tournament) … so it’s a good foundation we’re starting to build and we’re starting to believe as a franchise and as a team that we can also be a dominant force in CPL.

CPL 2022: “I focus on how setting up an innings and just being out in the crease for as long as possible”; Shimron Hetmyer looks forward to do the best for GAW

No team has lost as many finals as Guyana.  They were runners-up in the Caribbean Premier League five times and lost to Jamaica Tallawahs (2013 and 2016), Barbados Tridents (2014 and 2019) and Trinbago Knight Riders (2018).

However, the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who have suffered five painful defeats, are hoping that the 2022 tournament will be a special one.

After a stunning campaign for the Warriors in 2019 with 11 wins in a row, the lone loss came in the final against Barbados. This season, The prospect of Guyana hosting the CPL final for the first time has raised the expectations of the fans.

In an interview with virtual media interaction, Shimron Hetmyer, Amazon Warriors’ new captain showed his full confidence for winning the title this year.

“I actually see it as a challenge and I relish challenges,” Hetmyer said during a virtual media interaction.

“Want to really perform and do the best for my team because I know once I do half of my best or even my best, we will get there to a decent score more times than not. So, it’s really for me to focus on how I go about doing that and how I go about setting up an innings and just being out in the crease for as long as possible and not thinking too far ahead to the World Cup.

“I’m very excited, actually, it [captaincy] is something I was really looking forward to, to be honest. It’s something that I could learn a lot from, in terms of managing my innings, how to look after the team and be a little bit more of a team player than just trying to basically hit sixes and fours. I’m trying to do as much as I can in terms of being the captain and trying to help out as much as I can and just being there for the team.”

This will be Hetmyer’s first taste of captaincy in the CPL but In 2016, Hetmyer captained West Indies to the Under-19 World Cup title in Bangladesh.

“It [Under-19 captaincy experience] will help quite a lot; 2016 was quite a while [ago],” Hetmyer said. “But I guess from then it has helped me in some way because now I know I’d have done it before and just need to tap into that knowledge to find a way to get stuff done and to find a way to actually cross the line more times than not.”

Hetmyer is also open to taking inputs and suggestions from the other members in the squad.

“There’s a lot of guys there that are actually experienced and it helps in terms of field placement, see where the guys are and move them into specific angles and stuff like that.

“There’s also Keemo [Paul] who is a friend of mine who helps me as well. [Romario] Shepherd, Colin [Ingram]. Basically, the entire team will come over to me and actually lend some advice in terms of what they’re thinking and even the bowlers will come and try to basically pick my brain, in terms of what I would want them to do, which is really nice. It’s always good to know that there’s guys you could always go to and find out what they’re thinking and then they could help you in terms of field setting and who is the bowler at the specific time to make sure that everything goes smoothly.”

Hetmyer hinted that lower-order muscle in the form of Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith could allow him to bat higher rather than West Indies and other T20 franchises.

“It [batting position] is to be decided, to be honest. It’s mainly about the balance of the team,” Hetmyer said. “In this team, I think it would be much easier for me to bat a little bit higher because of the fact that we have so much power down towards the end and being in a team like that you wouldn’t really want to disrupt the powerplay and at the end; it’s about trying to stick around as the captain and as a batter of the team and get as much as I can out of the team.”

Romario Shepherd and kemo Paul have had to deal with injuries during West Indies’ recent international home season, but Hetmyer backed them to work their way back into the CPL and do the job for Amazon Warriors.

“I think injuries would’ve done quite a lot,” he said. “They would’ve gotten injured during the West Indies series against India – both of them got injured. But, as it is, the physio is doing a wonderful job taking care of [players] and managing the workload and stuff. So, I think coming into the CPL they would be much better and much stronger.”

Guyana Amazon Warriors squad: Shimron Hetmyer, Odean Smith, Romari Shepherd, Keemo Paul, Imran Tahir, Gudakesh Motie, Colin Ingram, Paul Stirling, Jermaine Blackwood, Ronsford Beaton, Shai Hope, Verasammy Permaul, Chandrapaul Hemrhami, Tabrain Hemchraj, Tabrain Hemrias Jr.  Sinclair, Matthew Nandu.

5 West Indies Batters to look out for in the Caribbean Premier League 2022

The West Indies team is currently in a state of confusion regarding the 2022 T20 World Cup selection and Expressing different opinions about those senior players. However, Dr. Desmond Haynes had earlier stated that the upcoming CPL tournament will be used to select the final squad for the World Cup.

“If you’ve got competition and somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection, so I think performance is very important to us. We did not say we have picked the World Cup team, so all the games leading up to the World Cup we must take them into consideration.”

The Caribbean Premier League is a six-team domestic T20 competition played across the Caribbean. It has been running since 2013 and the tenth season is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 31, with the first match against last year’s champions St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Jamaica Tallawahs. The final will be held a month later on Friday, September 30.

Accordingly, there are several batsmen who can be guessed to be given special attention in this tournament.

01. Shimron Hetmyer (Guyana Amazon Warriors)

Hetmayr was temporarily withdrawn from the national team after failing the fitness test. However, he managed to clear the fitness test he participated in before the recently concluded India T20 series.

Hetmyer, representing the Guyana Amazon Warriors this time, was nominated for its leadership a few days ago. Last year, Hetmyer scored 218 runs in 11 matches with an average of 24.22. His highest score that year was 54 which included two fifties.

2. Rovman Powell (Jamaican Tallawahs)

Rovman Powell can be mentioned as another hope of the team in this year’s T20 World Cup. Powell has rebuilt his game over the last year or two and is reaping the benefits as a result. He can hit the ball long and put opponents under pressure in a quick time.

In the concluded “6IXTY” Men’s competition, Rovman Powell scored 77 runs in 3 matches with an excellent strike rate and made a good entry into the CPL tournament. Powell played a valuable role for the team in the last few T20 matches he played. In the last five innings he played, he scored 27 not out, 21, and 18 against New Zealand, and 9 and 24 against India.

03 Andre Russell (Trinbago Knight Riders)

Russell can be called the most Dangerous all-rounder currently in the West Indies. Having gained a lot of experience playing in T20 leagues around the world, he is simply unstoppable if he stays on the wicket for a while.

There has been a lot of talk about him in recent weeks, with the West Indies head coach saying he can’t beg to the players and Desmond Haynes saying Russell won’t play in the World Cup based on information he found. However, Russell stated that West Indies are still his number one team and hopes to win a World Cup or two for the Caribbean.

However, Russell is another hope in the World Cup and his World Cup journey will be determined by his performances in the CPL. The last five innings he played were 72,14,12,17,64.

04. Sherfane Rutherford (St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots)

Sherfane Rutherford is one of the purest hitters of the cricket ball. There is a very good demand in various leagues across the world and hence extensive experience in the T20 format. Small and thin this player’s day, can be absolutely ruthless with the bowlers and tear apart any bowling attack.

He showed that well in the finished 6ixty tournament. He hit four back-to-back sixes against the St Lucia Kings to win the match, while his 15-ball 50 against the Knight Riders showcased his dangerousness. He scored 74 runs in 3 matches played at a strong strike rate of 352.38. It is the highest strike rate by a batsman who has scored more than 50 runs in the competition.

Accordingly, it can be thought that he will be a player who will attract the attention of many people in the CPL, and a place in the upcoming World Cup squad will be allocated according to his performance in the CPL.

05. Evin Lewis (St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots)

West Indies’ destructive opener Evin Lewis is still ineligible for the team after failing to pass the required fitness tests ahead of the upcoming series. The left-handed opener lastly represented West Indies in the T20 World Cup against Australia in November last year.

This fitness issue of his first starts before the 2020 West Indies tour of Sri Lanka. However, Lewis achieved success against Sri Lanka in March last year thanks to a commitment to fitness and gym work.

Lewis has been called Chris gayle’s template. Gayle once famously said of Evin Lewis that he can stop hitting sixes, but Evin Lewis would go after every ball and every bowler and won’t stop.

Evin Lewis will be the most attention player in this year’s CPL. However, he is a very valuable opening batsman for the upcoming World Cup, and we hope that he will solve all the problems of skill and physical fitness in this Competition.

“I’ve played in a few T10s before, and this one seems a little different.” – Rovman Powell talk about 6IXTY

The 6IXTY tournament includes six men’s teams and three women’s teams.  The tournament was start on August 24, 2022 in St. Kitts and Nevis and The tournament will feature 12 men’s matches and 7 women’s matches over five days of fast-paced action.

This revolutionary format will see the latest innovations that will change T10 cricket and make the game more fast-paced and action-packed. The first edition of THE 6IXTY will see the men’s and women’s teams compete for 2022 in a new 60-ball tournament featuring some of the best cricketers from around the world with title sponsor SKYEXCH.

Accordingly, the men’s tournament started yesterday and the first match was between Guyana Amazon Warriors and St. Lucia Kings. Batting first, the Warriors scored 111 for 05. However, chasing the set target, the Kings were all out for just 104 runs and the Guyana team won the first match by 07 runs.

The Jamaica Tallawahs team led by Rowman Powell played the second match of the tournament against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Accordingly, Tallawahs, who batted first, scored 139 runs. The opening pair of Tallawahs could not get off to a good start and the pair were bowled out for a very low score.

However, captain Rowman Powell, Fabian Allen and Raymon Reifer helped Tallawahs to 139 in the innings. The skipper scored 32 runs off 13 balls, Allen scored 45 runs off 18 balls and Raifer scored 38 runs off 19 balls.

Armed with some devastating players like Chris Gayle, Ewing Lewis, Andre Fletcher, but St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were all out for 84 runs in 7.2 overs.

Captain Powell shared his thoughts on the tournament ahead of Tallawahs’ inaugural season in the SKYEXCH 6IXTY tournament. Accordingly, he mentioned that with the new format, it will take some time to get used to the new rules.

“I think it’s a good feeling all around, the guys are ready and raring to go. We had a little talk with the guys and the excitement is buzzing, so hopefully we have a good showing as a team.”

and,

“I’ve played in a few T10s before, and this one seems a little different. It will take a little getting used to, so hopefully the transition becomes easy.”

Jamaica Tallawahs will not be able to get the services of Andre Russell this time after Russell moved to Kieron Pollard-led Trinbago Knight Riders. Accordingly, Powell admitted that there is no replacement for Russell.

“Extremely big loss. I don’t think any cricketer in the Caribbean can replace Russell. So, we’re not trying to fill the void, but build an impenetrable unit, where each guy supports each other, instead of relying on one or two persons.”

Powell believes that this 6IXTY tournament can be used as a preparation stage for the CPL. He explained it further.

“That’s what we’re going to use the 6IXTY as, using it as a scouting ground. But we’re still looking to win and fill the void we have in our team. For instance, if we have a death bowling problem, we put on two death bowlers, and they kind of auction for the spot to be the team’s death bowler when the CPL starts.”

Jamaica Tallawahs will have two former West Indies legends Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the head coach and Curtly Ambrose as the assistant coach. Accordingly, Powell said that they will use their experience to take the team forward in the CPL tournament.

Former Guyana and West Indies batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul

“This is a team that has a lot of cricket knowledge behind it, so hopefully with that knowledge, you can see it out in the field.”

The third match of the tournament was played between Trinbago Knight Riders and Barbados Royals and TKR who batted first scored only 76 runs. Br players achieved the target by scoring 80 runs in 6.3 overs.
