“If we play good cricket we have a very good chance” Tallawahs head coach, Shivnarine Chanderpaul confident of CPL victory

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2022) has entered its business end as the playoffs will begin from Tuesday (September 27) at Providence, Guyana.

Jamaica Tallawahs will be up against St Lucia Kings in the Eliminator a day later.

Jamaica Tallawahs are placed at the 4th spot in the Men’s Caribbean Premier League 2022 points table with 4 wins and 5 losses from their 10 matches of the league. The team has 9 points.

Brandon King is the top run-scorer for Jamaica Tallawahs with 326 runs at a strike rate of 135. He has struck 16 sixes and 30 fours. Rovman Powell has also made 223 runs at a strike rate of 125.

Mohammad Amir has been the best bowler for Jamaica Tallawahs and has picked up 13 wickets while bowling at an average of 15 and an economy rate of 5.88.

Asked about Tallawah’s chances of getting into the finals, Jamaica Tallawahs head coach, Shivnarine Chanderpaul said,

“If we play good cricket we have a very good chance of winning this tournament.”

Commenting on the increasing popularity of the T20 format of the game, Chanderpaul said it’s a welcome change as people don’t have time for the longer formats.

“They no longer have the time to sit for days and look at the game. They love cricket, and they want to spend a little time watching it but they also work and have families and other responsibilities so now that the game is cut down to three hours, that is perfect for them,” he said.

“They enjoy it- after work, they come to watch cricket, whatever little time they have they can go and watch cricket and that is where it is. This is the format, it’s going to be around forever, I think so. You have to get with the times and I think T-10 is one of the formats that’ll be here to stay also.”

CPL 2022, Qualifier 1, Probable Playing XIs: Mayers, Hetmyer express confidence ahead of first qualifier on Tuesday

The first qualifier of CPL 2022 will see the top two teams from the group stage lock horns on Tuesday, September 27.

Table-toppers Barbados Royals will take on second-placed Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

The 30th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2022) saw the Guyana Amazon Warriors lock horns with the Barbados Royals at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Monday, September 26.

A solid performance saw the Warriors beat the Royals comprehensively to book a place in the first qualifier.

Barbados Royals are placed at the top spot in the Men’s Caribbean Premier League 2022 points table with 8 wins and 2 losses from their 10 matches of the league. The team has 16 points.

“So far it’s been okay. The start wasn’t what we expected as a team but when we got back to Guyana, the guys spirits were much higher than I expected and they were ready to go, especially with the crowds. With the crowds here and knowing the conditions as much as we do, I think the guys are really up for the challenge. It’s just for us to continue,” Hetmyer said.

The Warriors are still unbeaten at home this season, whereas the Royals have looked flawless in the competition so far. However, their last meeting at the same venue saw the Warriors outplay the Royals.

“Mentally, the guys are good. We can’t really think about what happened in the past because a lot of these guys were not here when we made it to the knockout rounds before. We just have to keep taking it one game at a time and focus as hard as we can on the game to come.”

The match will start at 9:00 am Jamaican Time (10:00 am ECT).

“If he continues to develop nobody can stop him!” Jason Holder praise Obed McCoy for his progress

In a chat with ESPNcricinfo, former West Indies captain and senior all-rounder Jason Holder spoke about the future of West Indies cricket as well as the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Holder prides himself as a senior player who guides the youngsters in the Royals team. Having witnessed Ramon Simmonds’ progress up close, he gave the 20-year-old left-arm seamer glowing praise.

“Ramon Simmonds has really impressed me… To just see his composure under pressure and then him having the confidence to execute slower balls and yorkers to big players at big stages of the game is quite impressive.”

Simmonds is playing his first CPL season and has come forward to bowl tough overs for the Royals. Sensing this, Royals management (Paarl Royals) took him for SA 20 as well.

“The main thing for them [youngsters] is to understand themselves and that’s something I had to work out coming up as a youngster as well. For me it’s important, I help pave the way for them to understand themselves. Once I do that, I think the execution becomes a lot easier for them. Someone like Ramon Simmonds has really impressed me, particularly because this is the first time I’ve played with him.”

To just see his composure under pressure and then him having the confidence to execute slower balls and yorkers to big players at big stages of the game is quite impressive to me. I think he has talent that not many people can boast of at such a young age. Once he continues to develop, the sky’s the limit for him.”

He also shared his thoughts on Obed McCoy, the other left-handed pacer who has been central to the Royals’ run to the playoffs, forming a powerful partnership with Holder. McCoy and Holder have now taken a combined 29 wickets with their changes.

Obed McCoy has been in considerable form for the West Indies these days but has been caught under attack at some times.

However, in the last few matches, he has played the role of a regular in the set-up as well as a pure match-winner. McCoy is a specialist death bowler and has a lot of variety in his bowling arsenal.

He can bowl slow yorkers with precision along with off-cutters that can trouble the batsmen. Jason commented on his (McCoy) development:

“Obed has obviously been around now for a couple of years and his skill level is right up there, He’s probably one of the most skilled bowlers that we’ve produced in a very long time, and it is showing – he has been successful around the world. He has played in the IPL, and county cricket, he has done well in the Caribbean as well. Again, if he continues to develop and understands himself, then nobody can really stop him.” Holder said.

Also, Jason further mentioned that he would teach them what he knows like a father.

“He has got the talent and all the deliveries you could think of. So, it is important for me to continue to help them. Whatever they ask, just try to have answers for them. If I don’t have answers at a particular time, [I] try my best to find them and help them as much as I can. It’s like being a parent. I don’t have any children, but I see them as my little sons. So, it has been great so far and I’ve enjoyed it-not only on the field but off the field as well.”

In their chase, the Patriots could not find fluency as they lost four wickets in the first ten overs.

Watch; “Smashed for two sixes by Mr Muscle”: Ian Bishop narrates Kennar Lewis 111 metre six – Video goes viral

A new look Jamaica Tallawahs got their Caribbean Premier League campaign off to a winning start with a 47-run victory over the defending champions St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

Image; Twitter

A poor batting performance by the defending champions saw them scoring 136/8 in 20 overs.

The Patriots won the toss and opted to field first but the decision backfired as a sparkling 89 off 57 balls from Brandon King led the way for the Tallawahs who set an imposing 183/2 from their 20 overs.

Whilst King was timing the ball well, the same could not be said for his opening partner Kennar Lewis. Normally a powerful striker of the ball, Lewis struggled in his time at the crease.

However, Kennar Lewis hit the shot of the match which resulted in a gargantuan 111-metre six.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the ninth over when Lewis gave a demonstration of his brute force. Facing spinner Jaden Carmichael, Lewis thwacked an outside off-stump delivery down the ground. No real foot movement further exhibited benefits of having a strong base.

Having slogged swept Carmichael for a six over square leg on the previous delivery, Lewis provided some respite to his strike rate after having played a maiden in Carmichael’s previous over.

“Hatches on to that one as well. After a maiden over for Jaden Carmichael, he’s been smashed for two sixes by Mr. Muscle,” former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop said of Lewis’ consecutive sixes while calling the match at the Warner Park.

Watch;-

Lewis helped put on a 100-run partnership with King before he eventually fell for 48 off the bowling of Jaden Carmichael.

Lewis, who had received a reprieve early on in his innings, scored 48 (46) at a strike rate of 104.34 in spite of hitting six sixes.

The 27-year-old King player rightly won the match award for scoring 89 (57) with the help of eight fours and six sixes.

In reply, the Patriots fell to a sizable defeat losing wickets in regular clusters as the Tallawahs put on an excellent display in the field to back up their performance with the bat.

Evin Lewis, Dewald Brevis and Darren Bravo all fell inside the first half of the innings which left the Patriots needing 12.5 runs per over.

That proved too steep a mountain to climb, and despite some pyrotechnics from Sherfane Rutherford it was Nicholson Gordon who stole the show with the ball taking 3/24 to ensure a comfortable victory for the Tallawahs.

Brief scores: Jamaica Tallawahs: 183/2 (King 89, K Lewis 48; Carmichael 1/22, DJ Bravo 1/46) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots: 136/8 (Rutherford 33, Fletcher 31; Gordon 3/32, Imad 2/20) by 47 runs.
