“When you see him play for the West Indies, he looks half the player”- Aakash Chopra

The West Indies tour of India ended in a whitewash yesterday.  That was followed by the third Twenty20 match in which India won by 18 runs.  India won the ODI series and the Twenty20 series 3-0.

Veteran Indian commentator Aakash Chopra has criticized Kieron Pollard’s performance as a captain and player in the Indian tournament which ended.  He stated this through his YouTube channel.

Pollard did not play in the last two ODIs and returned to the side for three of the Twenty20 matches but failed to impress significantly, scoring only 32 runs in all three Twenty20 matches.

He mentioned Pollard as someone who had no interest.  He also said that he has no confidence in his batting as well as his positioning on the field as a captain.

“It seemed he is not interested at all. He is not bowling and when he comes to bat, he doesn’t look the same player. He looks much better for the Mumbai Indians.”

“Honestly, when you see him play for the West Indies, he looks half the player, whether you talk about the T20 World Cup or here, whether you talk about him not bowling or his field placements as a captain. It just does not inspire any confidence whatsoever.”

Nicholas pooran and Rovman Powell are the two most successful batsmen in the Twenty20 tournament. Pooran scored three consecutive half-centuries and Chopra commented positively on the two of them. He said that pooran needed more help.

Accordingly, he said:

“Rovman Powell has the power which we saw a long time ago in Andre Russell. Nicholas Pooran – one more time, the team was stuck but the guy played. Three half-centuries in three matches. He batted very well, he needed a little more support.”

Roston Chase bowled well throughout the Twenty20s, taking six wickets. However, the West Indies bowlers bowled poorly in the Depth overs of the Twenty20 tournament. In the last five overs of the match, India were given 90 runs.

This was criticized by Aakash Chopra

“The West Indies bowling is extremely ordinary. You are not looking a T20 team from any angle, they are a shadow of the champion team of the past. You used to play well collectively earlier, then individually but now even the individuals are in small numbers. There is no one who can be called a gun T20 bowler.”

  3. I totally agree with the statement & observations from the Aakash.
I personally think that Pollard is very insular !! with his team selections.
Plus his form and bad leadership of the team, warrant his exclusion from further West Indian team.
