“Try to keep myself close to mature” – Shimron Hetmyer reveals reason for his upturn in form at Guyana Amazon Warriors

A 106-run stand between Shai Hope (71) and Shimron Hetmyer (57) sees Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) pip Barbados Royals (BR) by 47 runs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, Match 27 in Guyana.

After being put in to bat first by the Royals, the Warriors posted a mammoth 219/8 in their 20 overs. Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of the bowlers for Barbados, finishing with 3/15 in four overs.

Guyana Amazon Warriors middle-order batters Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer bludgeoned swift half-centuries and formed a 106-run partnership to take their team past the 150-run mark.

Hetmyer belted 57 of those runs from just 34 balls with four boundaries and three sixes.

Earlier, Guyana Amazon Warriors, announced themselves on September 4 (as per local time) by smashing the second-highest team total in the tournament history against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Shimron Hetmyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz starred for the Warriors as the visitors notched up 266 runs in their 20 overs on a flat track in Basseterre, St Kitts.

The Warriors went past Jamaica Tallawahs’ score of 255, which was the second-highest in CPL history earlier.

However, the day belonged to Shimron Hetmyer to achieved history on Wednesday night in Basseterre. Hetmyer, who smashed a whirlwind 91 off 39, hit 11 sixes during his knock but not a single boundary.

This is the first time in T20 cricket history that a batter has hit more than 10 sixes in an innings without hitting a single four.

When media asks, Hetty, you said in an interview a couple days ago that you got a different hunger this season. What does that mean?

He said, “I think it’s more so with me not being a part of the. Well, they’re playing 11th, really. I think that’s kind of, like, hit me a little bit harder than I expected it would have, and now I think it’s after that, I think, like, I started to really focus in yourself a bit more on, like, more my training and everything and everything that I do leading up to games and so on. I try as much as possible to keep it close to much, keep myself close to mature, ready, not going out and just trying to get every ball for 6 hours, actually think about how I’m gonna. How I’m gonna actually put my links together, and then at the end, then I’ll try to do some success. I try more. So it’s. It’s things off the. Off the field, really, when it comes to, like, my training and something. I have. I’ve started to go to the gym now more than. More than I did before as well, and family plays a big part in my life as well. Trying as much as possible to get my family with me. I think when. When you have it, when I have my family just keeps me a little bit more ground level, more safe. When it comes to everything that happens on the field, even if I do. If I do well, if I don’t, I know that at the end of it all, my family is always there just watching and supporting me. And that’s something that plays a big part in my life and my cricket as well. So I think it’s more so about making them happy, making them proud.” he concluded
