T20 Blast: [Watch] Birmingham Bears handed 5 penalty runs after Carlos Brathwaite throws the ball at Derbyshire batter

Carlos Brathwaite’s Birmingham Bears lost to Derbyshire by seven wickets at Edgbaston.

Birmingham Bears were handed five penalty runs after their skipper Carlos Brathwaite made a strong throw towards batter Wayne Madsen in the T20 Blast 2022 match against Derbyshire on Sunday, June 19 at Edgbaston.

Birmingham Bears batted first and scored 159 runs for the loss of 07 wickets. Derbyshire completed the target with just 03 wickets in 18.1 overs.

The Bears lost the openers by a very cheap Score and Sam Haim scored an unbeaten 73 off 40 balls to take the team to a good total. Adam Hose scored 20 runs and skipper Carlos Brathwaite Scored 18 runs.

Wayne Madsen (55), Luis Reece (38), and skipper Shane Massood (45) led Derbyshire to victory. Meanwhile, the umpires decided to impose a five penalty fine against the bears in this match.

The incident took place in the 13th over of Derbyshire’s run-chase, Brathwaite bowled a length ball to Wayne Madsen who tried to play a defensive stroke. Brathwaite, seeking a run-out dismissal, then went on to collect the ball in his follow-through and made a strong throw towards the striker’s end stumps. However, the ball went on to hit Madsen.

But he ended up hitting Madsen, who copped a blow on his left leg. Brathwaite immediately apologized. However, the on-field umpires had a long chat about what panned out. In the end, they decided to hand the Bears five penalty runs.

Skipper Carlos took one wicket for 29 runs in 4 overs and Olly Stone also took one wicket in his four overs.
