The West Indies team managed to win the second T20I match against the visitors yesterday. The hosts, who batted first, scored 193 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

King and Powell scored fifties. Accordingly, Brendon King scored 57 runs and vice-captain Rowman Powell scored a quick 61 runs in 28 balls. Skipper Pooran scored 34 runs.

In the reply, Bangladesh scored only 158 runs for the loss of 06 wickets end off their 20 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan scored an unbeaten 68 and Afif Hossain scored 34 runs. In bowling, Shepherd and McCoy took two wickets each and Hossain took one wicket.

After winning by 35 runs against Bangladesh, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran shared his thoughts about the match in the post-match presentation.

“It’s important to manage our players, it’s important to manage Alzarri’s workload. Not only the fans, but even the ground staff also worked really hard. One of the best fans in the Caribbean, we love you guys.” WI skipper said.

He further said that players work hard and managing them is an important task.

“We wanted to put their bowlers under pressure. It’s a template we’d like to work on. The bowlers from both teams bowled well, they used the pitch well. Akeal read the pitch. Bangladesh’s spinners bowled well too.” he added

The first match was abandoned due to rain and after winning the second match, the hosts managed to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Twenty20 series.

“I stopped seeing myself as a big hitter” – Powell looks at himself as ‘a batsman with power’, not just a ‘big hitter’

Powell’s blistering 61 not out off 28 balls home side to 193 for five batting first in ideal conditions.

When Rovman Powell came into bat, West Indies were going about smoothly at 100 for 3 in the 13th over.

Before he came Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran added 74 for the third wicket.

Powell’s innings, highlighted by six sixes and two fours, earned him the man-of-the-match award.

“My plan is very simple at the crease,” said Powell. “I look to get a start, even if it takes a while because I know I can make up for it later on in the innings.”

“I’ve been struggling quite a bit with spin but I have to give credit to my coach (former West Indies Test opener) Robert Samuels for helping to adjust my game.”

Powell later said that the 23-run 16th over changed the course of the match significantly.

He probably realised that he was batting on a good pitch, before launching into an unbeaten 61 off 28 balls.

“We always sit in our batting meeting to talk about changing momentum and course of the game,” Powell said.

“I think that over today from Shakib did that for us. It is very, very important to pick match-ups and bowlers. I reckoned Shakib wasn’t having the best of the days. I decided to go after him. There was five overs of pace in the back-end. The platform was already set by the captain and Brandon, who both played well before I got to the crease. It was just an opportunity for me to advance the scoring. To bat all the overs.”

Powell, meanwhile, said that he doesn’t think of himself as a slogger, but more of a batter these days. He said that it is all part of his growth as a cricketer.

“I stopped looking at myself as a big hitter,” he said. “I start looking at myself as a batsman with power. With that comes control, know when to take a single, know when to attack. I think it has served me well so far.

“Growth is an important part in any professional sport. From both skill and mental perspective. I think I am growing in each passing year. I want to continue to learn.”

Powell said that they understood that their fans are looking forward to bigger things from this group ahead of the T20 World Cup laster this year.

“It is a change in the guard, to be honest. Our legends Chris Gayle, [Dwayne] Bravo and [Kieron] Pollard sit back and let us youngsters come through. We have to take this opportunity to bring smiles back to the people of the Caribbean,” he said.

Also Rovman Powell Works as a West Indies T20I vice-captain in First time.

“We know Rovman’s history,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said.

“He has captained the West Indies before and is also the captain of his CPL franchise [Jamaica Tallawahs]. Our role is to look at future leaders as well and we have identified a few, including himself, who we will be putting programmes around to ensure we keep them involved in that aspect of the cricket.

“Generally, we have to start looking at the bigger picture of getting these players playing together as often as possible in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup later down in the year. We need to ensure we are fielding a very strong side for that tournament.” chief selector Desmond Haynes said before the Series began.

WI vs BAN,2nd T20 Highlights: (Watch) Obed McCoy, Rovman Powell helps West Indies beat Bangladesh by 35 runs in 2nd T20

Brandon King and Rovman Powell scored half-centuries as West Indies clinched a 35-run win over Bangladesh on Sunday as the West indies went 1-0 up in the 3-match series.

Chasing 194 to win, Bangladesh never got going as they lost three within the powerplay 3/23.

Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain built a strong partnership but Romario Shepherd and Hayden Walsh bowled tight spells to keep the visitors at bay.

Shakib did eventually scored a half-century, but West Indies managed a 35-run win.

Seamers Romario Shepherd and Obed McCoy claimed two wickets each while spinners Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh proved the most economical as their variations made it difficult for Bangladesh to develop any sort of batting rhythm.

Earlier, Brandon King and Rovman Powell scored the fifties to put West Indies in a top position.

King anchored the innings with a 43-ball 57, while Powell played a blinder at the death to take the West indies to 193.

Taskin Ahmed had a day to forget conceding 46 in his 3 overs, while Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan having a good day with the ball.

The first T20I on Saturday was a washout. Bangladesh reached 105 for 8 in 13 overs with the match already having been reduced to 14 overs per side.

The third and last T20 is scheduled for Thursday in Providence, Guyana, followed by a three-match ODI series.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul appointed head coach of USA senior women’s and U-19 teams

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been named as the new head coach of USA Women, as well as their women’s under-19 team.

The 47-year-old has been based in Florida since 2005 and replaces former Australia wicketkeeper Julia Price, whose contract wasn’t renewed after USA Cricket determined that the national team’s head coach should be based in the country all year round.

The former West Indies batter, who scored more than 10,000 Test runs, begins in the role immediately, with USA Under-19s set to take part in the Cricket West Indies Under-19 Rising Stars T20 Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.

“The women’s game is something I am a huge advocate of, and I have followed the progress of the USA Women’s national team with keen interest,” said Chanderpaul, who has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal.

“I’ve enjoyed being involved in American cricket over the years as a resident of Orlando, so to be given this opportunity to become the head coach for USA Cricket is an incredible one.

“I’m really looking forward to using my 20-plus years of international cricket and my recent coaching experiences, to help the women’s teams progress to World Cups in years to come, particularly the inaugural Under-19 World Cup in January.”

In the immediate future, Chanderpaul is set to coach Jamaica Tallawahs in the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, while he joins former international teammate Courtney Walsh on the women’s international coaching circuit: he is West Indies’ head coach.

Richard Done, USA Cricket’s operations director, added that Chanderpaul’s “depth of experience will be invaluable, not only in his primary role, but to the development of the wider high-performance player and coaching pathways in the USA”.

A wet outfield delayed the start for over an hour and a half and reduced the match to 16-overs-per-side.

After play was halted in the eighth over, the match was reduced to 14 overs each.

Bangladesh faced 13 overs when rain interrupted play again with the score on 105/8.

Shakib al Hasan (29 off 15 balls) and (wk) Nurul Hasan (25 off 15 balls) were the only players to develop any momentum in the Bangladesh’ innings as they lost wickets regularly to a varied home attack marshalled by captain Nicholas Pooran.

Every West Indies bowler got a wicket, led by fast bowler Romario Shepherd with 3/21.

It was career-best figures for the 27-year-old who bowled with good control as Bangladesh slumped from 56/2 to 77/7 in the 11th over.

His first wicket was that of Litton Das who was outsmarted by a slower ball and spooned a simple catch to captain Nicholas Pooran at midwicket.

In Shepherd’s third and final over, he took two more wickets — Mahmudullah superbly caught by Hayden Walsh Jr at backward point and then Mahedi Hasan, taken behind by keeper Devon Thomas.

Walsh also played a crucial role with the ball as he took 2/24 to cause the middle-order slide.

He first had Shakib taken by Thomas as he tried to go after a well-flight wrong-un, and then sent back Afif Hossain for a duck as the left-hander hoisted a catch into the safe hands of Brandon King.

The game was the first cricket international at Windsor Park since it was rebuilt after being severely damaged in 2017 by Hurricane Maria.

The second match of the series will be played later on Sunday at the same venue.

“we’re going to have to make a decision” – Dr. Haynes on How Workload Management crucial for Alzarri, Seales

West Indies will take on Bangladesh in the 1st T20I on Saturday (July 2). The hosts beat the visitors 2-0 in the Test series and will carry that confidence in the T20 series.

Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) selection panel on Tuesday announced the West Indies men’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20 International series and the three-match One-Day International series.

Meanwhile, Dr. Haynes said this at a press conference on Zoom on Wednesday, Having a large pool makes it very easy to select players for all format. Haynes further said,

“I think that is very important and that is one of the things that the West Indies Cricket Board has done this year where we no longer have a white-ball contract or a red-ball. contract.”

He also explained that if the contracted players are suitable for the white ball or the red ball, they will be used for that.

“You now have guys who are contracted to the West Indies team so if we see he is fit for a white-ball competition, he will be selected, and if he can play in the red-ball competition, he will be selected.”

He added that he is currently working with the selection committee to create a large pool.

“I don’t think we have the numbers to go down the line to just have guys as one type of player; white-ball or red-ball. So, yes, it is a very good thing to have a big pool and I think that’s what the selectors are trying to do as well—to broaden the pool.”

Dr Haynes said the workload of fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph must be managed, as the players are becoming consistent members of the West Indies team in different formats.

Joseph and Seales both played in the recent two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

Joseph has been included in the squads for the T20 and One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh and Seales is in the ODI squad. The T20 series bowls off on Saturday.

They have also been busy playing franchise T20 cricket.

“It is not only Alzarri, we are very concerned about Seales as well, because what we are saying, as I mentioned earlier, I felt really bad to know that those guys had to be in Pakistan playing in those conditions and then coming home and in two days they (were) involved in a Test match (against Bangladesh).”

“I felt really bad to know that those guys had to be in Pakistan playing in those conditions and then coming home, and in two days they were involved in a Test match. They had to play back-to-back Test matches against Bangladesh after playing back-to-back Test matches against England so they were playing back-to-back-to-back.”

As well as,

“I find it hard. We’re in a situation where we’re looking for ODI points and T20 points. We are in a situation where we are looking for results to make life easier in the two big competitions which are the 50-overs World Cup and T20 World Cup.”

Alzzari, who performed exceptionally well in the Test series against Bangladesh, has also been selected for the ODI and T20 matches with them.

“But I think we’re going to have to make a decision on what we are looking for because we can’t have players playing in these conditions and in all three formats. I think we have to look very seriously about how we’re going to be resting both Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales. We got to be very careful, though, that we don’t burn them out (in) all three formats of the game, and that is my biggest concern at the moment.”

Cricket West Indies (CWI), on Wednesday, announced the men’s squad for the upcoming home white-ball fixtures against Bangladesh.

Earlier in the year, Hetmyer made himself unavailable for West Indies selection due to the birth of his child. He has not represented West Indies since the Last World T20 in November.

During his IPL , Hetmyer has been a huge contributor to the Royals’ surge up the points table. As the team’s finisher, he has scored 291 runs at an average of 72 (he has remained unbeaten in seven out of 11 innings). A more telling statistic of his influence is his death-overs (17-20) strike rate.

A few days ago, Cricket West Indies announced international retainer contracts for Men’s 18 players for the period 2022 – 2023 but Shimron Hetmyer not in there.

‘Roach’s exceptional influence’ – Phil Simmon heaped praise on West Indies fast bowlers for recent performance

Phil Simmons heaped praise on his fast bowlers who helped West Indies in the Top early in the second Test in St Lucia.

(Photo by RANDY BROOKS/AFP via Getty Images)

The West Indian pacers picked up wickets on slow wickets and it showed in the stats with Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach topping the wicket-taking charts with 12 and 10 wickets respectively in 2 Tests.

Roach in the process surpassed 250 Test wickets, going past Michael Holding, he now has 252 wickets to be sixth on the all-time leading West Indies list.

Young fast bowler Jayden Seales also picked up nine wickets.

“(Roach) is helping the fast bowlers to mature quicker,” said Simmons on Monday (June 27).

“I think he has an exceptional influence on all the young fast bowlers. He has taken his role as the senior pro very seriously. It shows on the field. You can see him talking to them, who are trying to do the right things all the time. I think his influence has been massive to these young fast bowlers.” he added

Apart from Joseph and Roach, Anderson Philip had an impressive debut, while Jayden Seales and Kyle Mayers chipped in with timely wickets as Bangladesh were restricted to below 250 across all four innings.

“The first (Test) wicket wasn’t conducive to fast bowling but we got them out for low scores,” Simmons said.

“In this Test match, to get them bowled out on the first day on a comparatively slow wicket, gave us the driver’s seat. The fast bowlers deserve a lot of credit. We have worked hard in the two series, and come out victorious.

This one maybe wasn’t as hard as the first one, the important thing is that at the end of the day, the W is behind the two Tests. We won 2-0 in Bangladesh in 2021 as well. You have to take all those things, and sit back and enjoy it.” West Indies Head Coach added.

Philip also had a good first outing but Simmons felt that nerves got the better of him at times.

“I think he had a good debut. Two wickets earlier on, but he got a bit of cramps. It comes with all the nervousness that comes with your first Test match. If you are not nervous, something is wrong.

He was nervous, and it didn’t help him. He bowled well in both the innings. He did what the captain wanted him to do.” he added

Mayers, not only impressive with the ball, but his all-round prowess was on display, even having scored his second Test century in the second Test.

“He brings in the wicket-taking factor. He is not express, but he puts the ball in the right areas. If he bats normally, he scores quickly in all three formats. I have to get him to understand that he needs to bat normally. Once we get that, he is going to be a force to be reckoned with.” simmons concluded.

After the two big wins against Bangladesh, Windies add some valuable ICC World Test Championship points to their tally. but they’re still far placed from the top two teams – Australia and South Africa.

West Indies remain in the sixth place ICC World Test Championship points table.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth spots are taken, respectively, by Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and West Indies. England, New Zealand, and Bangladesh are placed at the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions respectively.
