“Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree did their job really well. For Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh to be like that..,”- Nicholas Pooran backs Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh to shine in the T20I series

West Indies white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran has backed the spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr. to come up with the goods in the upcoming T20I series against India.

Akeal Hosein is still settling into the international cricket he made his debut in 2021 while his compatriot Hayden Walsh Jr. secured his maiden appearance in 2019.

Pooran (C), Powell, Brooks, Drakes, Hetmyer, Holder, Akeal Hosein, Joseph, King, Mayers, McCoy, Keemo Paul, Romario, Odean, Devon Thomas and Hayden Walsh.

Asked whether Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr. could replicate the exploits of Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree, Pooran replied ahead of the first T20I in Trinidad:

“Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree did their job really well. For Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh to be like that, it is obviously going to take a while. Narine and Badree have a lot of experience while these guys have just started at the International level. There is a long way for them to go, we just have to give them the space to understand their craft.”

Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr. are the frontline spin-bowling options for the five-match T20I series against the Men in Blue. Gudakesh Motie is yet to recover from a fractured thumb while Fabien Allen has pulled out due to personal reasons.

Nicholas Pooran will lead the West Indies in the second of the five T20Is later today (July 29) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Ground in Trinidad.

India beat West Indies by 68 runs in the opening T20 International on Friday. Invited to bat, India posted 190 for 6 with skipper Rohit Sharma top-scoring with 64 off 44 balls.

West Indies were restricted to 122-8 in 20 overs, losing by a huge margin. Ravichandran Ashwin (2/22), Arshdeep Singh (2/24) and Ravi Bishnoi (2/26) were the most successful bowlers for India.

CWG 2022, Match Highlights: Barbados beat Pakistan to register their first win in the Commonwealth Games

Barbados are off the mark in the 2022 Commonwealth Games after beat Pakistan by 15 runs at Edgbaston on Friday (July 30).

Barbados, who were playing their first-ever international match and are representing Cricket West Indies at CWG 2022.

Captain Hayley Matthews starred with an all-round performance, scoring a half-century and having a hand in four wickets, while Kycia Knight (62) top-scored with the bat.

They Didn’t have the best of starts as they lost opener Deandra Dottin cheaply for eight after being put into bat.

However, Kycia and Hayley recovered their side quickly with an impressive 107-run stand between them for the second wicket.

Although the Pakistan bowlers kept Barbados batters under control, the duo brought up their fifties before Hayely departed for 51 as Fatima Sana got the much-needed breakthrough.

Hayely’s 50-ball innings saw four boundaries and one maximum. Pakistan struck twice again but Kycia (62* off 56 balls) ensured to finish on a high as Barbados posted 144 for four.

In reply, Pakistan lost their opener Iram Javed for a golden duck on the first ball of the chase.

Iram was caught behind off the bowling of Shamilia Connell. Barbados captain Hayley was then involved in the dismissal of the next three batters, including Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof.

While Muneeba Ali was cleaned up, Omaima Sohail and Maroof were run out, reducing Pakistan to 49/4 inside 11 overs.

Pakistan all-rounder Nida Dar single-handedly kept on fighting but couldn’t find a partner at the other end to support her in the run chase. Dar was eventually left stranded on 50 not out as Pakistan were restricted to 129/6.

Matthews was keen to big up their impact and importance to the team.

“It was electric, man,” she said, “I’m always really well supported by the Barbados team. We have a special bond within the group but I really can’t say much more, it was special, that’s for sure.”

“I think when we were out playing our domestic season, what we tried to focus on really hard as the top four core batting group was batting really deep in the innings and that showed today,” Matthews said.

“Obviously, we wouldn’t necessarily have as much depth as we usually would and experience as we usually would within a West Indies team. So backing all the other players 100%, we know that our top four or five batters are our main ones that are looking to score most of the runs, and it was really good that we were able to spend some time at the crease and bat really deep today.”

“I think what’s really good as well is our young players, they really take in as much information as they can, try to learn as much as possible and that’s exactly what you want in a group,” she said. “I keep saying we have a really tight group with a lot of experience and a lot of a youth mix.”

A key theme that has emerged throughout the lead-up to the Games has been the pride players are taking in being part of a wider multi-sport team and Matthews echoed that sentiment: “It’s really good to know that we’re represent something so much bigger now”.

One big backer for Matthews as she embarks on her journey as an international captain is Taylor.

“She messaged me this morning actually to tell me, ‘all the best, take it stride by stride’, and she has been a fantastic captain for me and the West Indies team for the last couple of years and I know she’s always supporting me 100 percent,” Matthews said.

Next up for Barbados is a much tougher proposition – T20 world champions Australia.

“Looking at Australia, we know the kind of class players and athletes that they have in their team,” she said. “But at the same time, I think it’s really good that we can go there with no pressure on us. No one’s looking for us to win the match and I think it’s going to give us a really good opportunity to be able to head out there and free up and play some natural cricket.

“We have some very special players within our team mixed with some youth players that are really full of heart and full of pride and ready to just give everything so I think that combination could hopefully help us to pull off something special against Australia as well.”

Barbados will meet Australia (10.30 pm IST) on July 31 in their Group A fixtures.

“I still believe the young man” – Sir Viv Richard on Nicholas Pooran’s leadership capabilities

With the defeat of another ODI series, Sir Viv Richard has expressed his views regarding the series against India.

India has completed a clean sweep of 3-0 over West Indies by winning the third one-day international by 119 runs. With this win, India registered a record 12th consecutive bilateral series win against the West Indies.

The match was reduced to 35 overs due to rain. Chasing the target of 257 runs, West Indies were all out for 137 runs in 26 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal took four wickets.

In the 2nd ODI, West Indies openers Kyle Mayers (39 runs) and Shai Hope (115 runs) gave an attacking 65-run start and Shai Hope combined with Nicholas Pooran (74 runs) and Shamarh Brooks (35 runs) in the middle overs to score his 13th century. They finished with a massive score of 311/6 in the 50 overs with good cameos in the final overs.

Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales were excellent with the ball with combined figures of 20-1-86-3. they failed to defend the total as the visitors got over the line with two deliveries and as many wickets to spare.

In the 1st ODI, India posted a mammoth 308 for 7 with Shikhar Dhawan top-scored with a 99-ball 97. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 64 and 54 respectively. Chasing a record target, the West Indies could only score 305 for 6 in 50 overs. Kyle Mayers top-scored for the home side with 75 while Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King contributed 46 and 54 respectively.

The West Indies needed 15 off the final over for a record chase at Queens Park Oval but Mohammed Siraj was able to stop a rampaging Romario Shepherd (38 not out off 25).

In the Interview, Sir Viv Richard said there needs to be some soul searching by all involved.

“Sometimes you have to question yourself and not just the captain and ask, ‘am I making an input in terms of what’s going on or am I giving enough?’ You have to sometimes try and find out about yourself because all that can help in the next match moving forward. To me, you just have to keep your chin up; losing is all part of the game but when it becomes overbearing, I guess that’s when it becomes very dismal,” he said.

Regarding recently appointed West Indies white ball captain Nicholas Pooran, Sir Viv said that bad starts as a leader can become a habit if mistakes are not identified and corrected as soon as possible.

“You can have a bad start and it depends on how long that bad start continues but you can always pick yourself up. I still believe that and obviously these things go through your mind in terms of ‘what are the things we are doing that are not right and we’re not connecting?’ So, all of these things go through your mind but at the end of the day I still believe the young man has enough cricketing ability, plus what he knows he has got upstairs in terms of the cricket brain, so even though it looks dismal at present there is still an opportunity for him to turn it around and to catch up at some point,” Sir vivan Richard said.

IND vs WI 3rd ODI Highlights: ‘We’re going to figure it out’ – Pooran says the best version of West Indies is not far away

India beat West Indies by 119 runs via DLS method in a rain-hit third ODI to complete a 3-0 whitewash against West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, on Wednesday.

The first interruption came with India 115/1 after 24 overs. After the match was shortened to a 40-over contest rain stopped play again with India 225/3 in 36 overs.

Opting to bat, India posted 225 for three in 36 overs with opener Shubman Gill scoring an unbeaten run-a-ball 98 and skipper Shikhar Dhawan hitting a 74-ball 58.

West Indies, set a revised target of 257 in 35 overs, lost wickets regularly and were all out for 137 in 26 overs.

In case of left-handed Mayers, it was a perfectly full outswinger (inswinger for the batter) that tailed in and went through his defence.

Right-handed batter Brooks got an off-cutter that was pitched slightly short of length but jagged back sharply to find the batter plumb in-front.

In a chase of 257 in 36 overs, the scorecard reading 0 for 2 is always bad omen and West Indies never recovered from that setback.

The normally consistent Shai Hope (22) was stumped by Sanju Samson off Chahal’s bowling, while King after some breathtaking shots was beaten by an arm-ball from Patel.

Mohammed Siraj put West Indies on the back foot in the second over of the chase, when he cleaned Kyle Mayers up with a good length delivery before trapping Shamarh Brooks in front with one that angled in. West Indies were 0 for 2 at that stage, with nine deliveries gone.

Brandon King and Shai Hope briefly brought them back on track with a 47-run stand before Yuzvendra Chahal had Hope stumped for 22.

King was then joined by Nicholas Pooran in another partnership that gave West Indies hope, before Axar Patel’s arm ball in the 14th over bowled King for 42.

But immediately after, Pooran fired a six and four off Deepak Hooda, keeping his side afloat as the required rate hovered around eight an over.

However, Keacy Carty’s struggle to get going at the other end seemed to put pressure back on Pooran; when Carty finally decided to try something different, he skipped down to Shardul Thakur in the 19th over only to bottom-edge on to his stumps for 5 off 17 balls.

By then, West Indies needed nearly 10 an over, and although Pooran hit two more fours off Axar, he fell for 42 in the 22nd over to all but end the game.

In the media conference, west indies skipper Nicholos Pooran said best version of West Indies is not far away

“We’re just starting to obviously put performances together,” Pooran said on the eve of the third ODI. “I don’t want to come to a conclusion and say our batting is our strength or our bowling is our strength. As a team we’re still figuring it out. We haven’t put a collective effort together yet, obviously the results haven’t shown that yet, but the more games we play as a unit, we’re going to figure it out and we’re close to crossing the line and actually figuring it out what is our strength as a team.

“I don’t want to be saying that our batting is our strength or bowling is our strength. I want both facets to be our strength, to be honest. That’s how we’re going to win cricket games. We’re just staying the moment, trying to learn as fast as possible and sticking through these tough times as a team.”

“The confidence level is there,” Pooran said. “The guys are obviously hurt. Those two losses obviously hurt us a lot but that’s another game and that’s another experience and another opportunity for us to learn. This game keeps teaching us different things and I’m just happy that we’ve had that experience. It’s difficult to obviously lose, I’m disappointed, but that’s where the learning takes place and as a group we understand that and we know that for a fact that it’s our time now.

“I keep telling winning and losing is contagious and at the moment in ODI cricket we’re losing and we’re finding ways to lose games, but in terms of the confidence level all the guys are ready for the challenge again. We’re ready to come out there and put our hearts and souls out there and perform together as a team.”

“This is a big question” – sir Vivian Richards questions the effectiveness of “backroom staff” as Players continues to struggle

The West Indies suffered a crushing 59-run defeat to India in Lauderhill on Saturday, falling to an 1-3 series defeat in the five-match series

Opting to bat, India posted 191 for five, riding on a solid batting display with Rishabh Pant (44 off 31 balls) emerging as the top scorer. Rohit Sharma (33) and Sanju Samson (30) also chipped in with useful contributions.

Obed McCoy (2/66) and Alzarri Joseph (2/29) took two wickets each. In reply, WI could manage 132 all-out in 19.1 overs. Arshdeep Singh (3/12), Avesh Khan (2/17), Axar Patel (2/48) and Ravi Bishnoi (2/27) claimed two wickets each for India.

Meanwhile, Vivian Richards questions the effectiveness of “support staff” in the current West Indies squad.

According to Sir Vivian, some players continue to struggle with the same issues that have plagued their game for some time now.

“What I think is one of the more interesting things about West Indies Cricket at present and this is a big question. Are we getting enough of the best information from the backroom team? That’s a big question because whatever information you get from [backroom staff] it should transfer onto the field and we are not seeing this at present,” he said.

“This ODI team is a talented team in terms of all-round ability, so something is not gelling at the moment and I believe we have to start asking some questions,” he added

Brandon King (13) and Kyle Mayers (14) both got starts but fell cheaply while captain Nicholas Pooran sprinted to 24 off just eight balls before he was run out after a mix-up with Mayers.

Rovman Powell with a quick 24, Shimron Hetmyer (19) and Jason Holder (13) were the only other batsmen to reach double-figures as the Windies 132 all-out after 19.1 overs.

Also, West Indies have now lost three ODI series on the trot after defeats against Pakistan and Bangladesh.
